To You and to those whose happiness is yours,
Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Beth El
a Happy and Prosperous New Year.
"Awake, Awake, Put on thy Strength" (Isaiah L11, 1.)
The words that an inspired prophet anciently pro-
claimed to the stricken Daughter of Zion, I speak to my
people of the House of Israel today. "Awake, awake,
put on thy strength, 0 Israel."
In the tragic and terror laden conditions amid which
we are living I can think of no more telling or timely
New Year's message for the Jew than that which warns

him against a defeatist philosophy and which urges him

of helplessness but even of utter hopelessness and that
they stand ready to give up the battle for survival, be-
cause it seems beyond their strength.

But though this be true it still behooves us to realize

I urge that we begin this New Year with this thought

clear in mind. Let us be ready and eager to make any
sacrifices that may be necessary to win the war. That

is our first and most important duty. Let us give unstint-

of our brethern as can renew their lives there. Of our
duty in this regard there can be no shadow of doubt.

But through it all let us be constantly alert to the im-

there will increasingly rest upon us in the post-war
world the supreme obligation to stress for our own brot-

rr HE RABBIS were glad to ob-
i- serve that there was no more
Jewish problem. There could he
no special problem of any group
in a brotherhood in which there
was justice enough and bread
enough for every man, and no
man had cause to envy his
brother.
There was a memorial service
for all the sainted dead who had
given thejr lives in the Great
War, 100 years before, to this end
of brotherhood, liberty and justice.
They were a generation that put
aside all the comforts, easements
and luxuries of an abundant civil-
ization to fight and to die, if they
had to, for the eternal values of
the spirit, for this ultimate broth-
erhood. God rest their souls.
I believe this is true prophecy
and everybody must believe it
who has faith in ultimate prog-
ress. True, it doesn't comfort
today's pain to believe that it will
be all right in 100 years, but we
are on the plane of immense his-
tory and the immediate tomorrow
is of small importance. We suffer
and sacrifice for the generations
to come; that's the history of
man.
For the New Year I wish the
leaders courage against the days
to come and understanding to
know what they are living these
days for.
