The Pope appealed to Laval and Marshal Petain after he WAS in- formed that the Nazis had de- manded immediate roundup in both occupied and unoccupied France of all refugees who en- tered France after 1933 when Hitler seized power in Germany. The Pope's plea was brought to Laval by Mgr. Valerio Valeri, Papal Nuncio. At the same time protests against the anti-Jewish deporta- tions and persecutions were made to Marshal Petain by Cardinal Suchard, Archzishop of Paris, and Cardinal Gerlier, Archbishop of Lyons. Both Catholic leaders de- livered a "spirited" protest against the racial and religious persecu- tions. Fernand de Brinon, Vichy's emissary to NHS, was reported to have devised the protesting clergymen that the anti-Semitic program was a definite part of the Laval Government's policy.
