Russian . Jewess
Captures Nazi
Colonel

KUIBYSHEV. (WNS) — A
young Jewish girl named Basia
was the toast of the Soviet
Union this week following her
capture of a Nazi colonel. The
heroic exploits of Basia and
other Jewish guerrilla fighters
was described here by Alexander
Kornictchuk, noted Ukrainian
writer, who spent several weeks
with the guerrilla bands behind
the Nazi lines.

Upon his return here Korniet-
•huk reported: One meets Jews
in almost every guerrilla de-
tachment. In one place I met
a Jewish father, mother and two
sons, all conducting guerrilla
activities in the forests during.
the cold winter months.

"A Jewish girl named Bashi
has become a legendary figure
among the guerrillas. She was
responsible for blowing up
bridges and warehouses in the
rear of the enemy and, with the
help of another Jewish guerrilla
fighter, even succeeded in cap-
turing a German colonel and
bringing him alive to the Rus-
sian lines as a prisoner.

"Once she was hidden in mud
under heavy rain for two nights
until she succeeded in destroy-
ing a German telephone line.
She crossed the front lines eight
times and each time brought
back important information. Her
husband was killed in action and
she herself was twice wounded."

Yishuv Will Stand .
Firm in Defense
of Country

JERUSALEM. (WNS) — More
than 200 Palestine Jewish writ-

ers, meeting in special confer-

ence here to further the coun-
try's war effort, stressed that
"the Yishuv will face danger
proudly and will stand firm in
defense of the country and its
national honor."

The writers adopted a procla-
mation of "warm brotherly con-
solation and encouragement" to
Jews in all parts of the world
and urged them not to despair
for "the day is not far off when
the clouds hanging over the
globe will be dispersed and the
light will shine also for you."
"We are sure that your sac-
rifices are not in vain," the proc-
lamation continued. "Your blood
will be avenged. Your spilt blood,
tears and sufferings will be con-
verted into new strength and
in a new world you will see the
road to Zion. There can be no
greater consolation and reward
for the Jewish people than a
free, natural, national life."

Messages were received from
Hon. Leighton McCarthy, Cana-
dian Minister to the United
States; M. George Theunis, Bel-
gian Ambassador to the United
States; M. Jan Ciechanowski,
Polish Ambassador to the United
States; M. W. Munthe de Mor-
genstierne, the Ambassador of
Norway; M. Huges le Gallais, the
Ambassador of Luxembourg; Dr.
A. Louden, the Netherlands Am-
bassador to the United States;
Vladimir S. Hurban, the Czecho-
slovak Minister to the United
States; and Mr. Constantin Fo-
titch, the Yugoslavian Minister to
the United States, as well as M.
Adrian Tixier, head of the Free
French Delegation in the United
States, and Mm. Leon de Bayle,
Adrian Reginos and Julian R.
Caceres, the Ministers of Nica-
ragua, Guatemala and Honduras.
The demonstration was called
for the purpose of condemning
the mass slaughter of defenseless
populations by Hitler and, in view
of the threat of the Nazis to
exterminate the whole Jewish peo-
ple, to invoke adequate action to
defend the threatened Jewish
communities of Europe against
new assaults; to secure support
for the self-defense of the Jewish
community of Palestine, now
endangered by the common
enemy, and to strengthen the
assistance of the Jewish com-
munity to the United Nations in
their war upon the Axis.

The facts concerning the mur-
der of 1,000,000 Jews by the
Nazis in the occupied countries
and the planned extermination of
seven million other Jews en-
slaved by the Nazis were re-
