Detroit Jewish Community Council
Endorses the Jewish Theater Guild
Quarterly Conference to Be Held June 23
at Center; Groups Urged to Join Rubber Drive
The Jewish Community Council
officially has endorsed the Jewish
Theater Guild of Detroit. In ex-
ecutive committee session, the
Council unanimously passed a resi-
lution welcoming the establishment
of the Jewish Theater Guild in
Detroit, and commended the pro-
ject to the community.
Commenting on the Jewish
Theater Guild, Iames I. Ellmann,
president of the Jewish Commu-
nity Council, stated, "As this
undertaking is a communal endea-
vor and not for the personal profit
of any individual, the Council is
happy to endorse this project and
to urge the support of all per-
sons in the Jewish community who
are interested in the formation
and development of the Jewish
Theater Guild of Detroit."
"A true art theater," remarked
Aaron Rosenberg-, chairman of the
education committee of the Coun-
cil, "is the medium for expressing
the culture of a people in such a
manner that everyone can under-
stand, appreciate and learn from
its presentations. Our Jewish cul-
tu•al heritage is so rich that
every person interested feels the
need for such a theater. This is
the reason why the Jewish Thea-
ter Guild is striking a responsive
chord with every group in our
population. The community needs
the theater. The theater needs the
community. The Jewish Commun-
ity Council recognizes the Jewish
Theater Guild as the means for
satisfying this need most effect-
ively."
The June Quarterly Conference
of the delegates of the Jewish
Community Council of Detroit
will take place on Tuesday, June
23, at 8:15 p. m. in the auditorium
of the Jewish Community Center,
Woodward at Holbrook. This will
be the first conference of delegates
On Sunday evening, June 14
at the Leland Hotel, the Com-
mittee for a Jewish Army of

formed a new division. Forty
local people attended.
The organization shall hold
weekly meetings and plans are
being made to hold a series of
parlor meetings throughout the
city and then a mass meeting
for the end of July or in Aug-
ust.
Moir Grossman, vice-chairman
of the executive board of the
Committee for a Jewish Army,
and known as one of the most
influential Zionist leaders, ad-
dressed the new organization.
Mr. Grossman, who with the
late Vladimir Jabotinsky, was in
the forefront of the fight to
create the Jewish Legions in the
last war, and thus set a prece-
dent for a Jewish Army in this
one, explained the program and
the platform of the committee.
He emphasized that the commit-
tee is non-sectarian and non-
partisan. He explained that the
committee, headed by Pierre van
Paassen is an independent or-
ganization operating without the
Zionist frame work, and how im-
portant it is for Zionism.
In telling of Jewish opposi-
tion to the creation of a Jew-
ish Army, Mr. Grossman stated
Dan Frohman, eminent com-
that those Jews who consider
their fellow Jews as co-religion- poser, conductor and instrumen-
ists and nothing else, should talist, has been appointed choir

that if the Nazis were perse-
cuting the Catholics of Europe
in the manner that the.'; treat
the Jews, the Catholics through-
out the world would now be en-
gaged in a Holy Crusade agaitmt

Mr. Grossman further empha-
sized the non-partisan character
of the committee and particu-
larly stressed the role that in-
telligent non-Jews must be called
upon to play in the organization.
Ile stressed the fact that the
creation of a Jewish Army of
200.000 Palestinian and state-
less Jews based in the Middle
East, is of vital importance to
the war efforts of this country.

Extermination of
Jews Is Pledged
Reprisal by Nazis
LONDON. (WNS)—Nazi Prop-
aganda Minister Joseph Goeb-
bels warned this week that Ger-
many would carry out a mass
"extermination of Jews" in re-
prisal for the devastating Allied
air bombings of German cities.
Goebbels blamed the recent
raids, in which the R.A.F. used
more than 1,000 bombers, on
the blood-thirsty "Jewish press"
of London and New York.
The chief Nazi propagandist,
admitting that the B.A.F. had
inflicted, great damage on Ger-
man cities, issued his warning
at a time when Germany is in
deadly fear of the expected
British-American air raids. In
an article published in Das
Reich, Goebbels said:
"The Jews are playing a friv-
volou:; game and they will pay
for it with the extermination of
their race in all Europe and
perhaps even beyond Europe."
