love for Judaism and the Jew-
ish people and personified the
traditions of Jewish learning
and religious leadership.
Rabbi Levinthal is survived by
his family in Jerusalem, which
includes his widow, four mar-
ried children, and three unmar-
ried daughters. His family was
entirely dependent on him for
their livelihood.
Very impressive rites were
conducted for the departed on
Sunday, May 24. The funeral
procession started from Chesed
Shel Emes. Hundreds of people
walked after the coffin, borne
upon the shoulders of local rab-
bis, and religious laymen, from
Joy Rd. and Lawton Ayes. to
Taylor and Woodrow Wilson
Ayes. where an audience of
more than a thousand people
gathered at the Beth Tefilo
Emanuel Synagogue. Officiating
were Rabbis Max J. Wohlgelern-
ter, Joseph Eisenman, Leizar
Levine speaking for the Va'ad
Hayeshivath, Isaac Stollm a n,
Reuben Grazowski, renowned
European Rosh Yeshiva, now vis-
iting in Detroit and Eliezer Sil-
ver of Cincinnati. Several rab-
bis from Chicago arrived to at-
tend the funeral and many
messages of condolence were re-
ceived from New York. Intern-
ment was at Cemetery of Con-
gregation Beth Aaron V'Israel.
The body will be shipped to Pal-
estine at the conclusion of the
war.
