WEIZMANN

the issuance of the Balfour Dec-
laration, urged that these two
steps be used as the cornerstone
for a far-reaching reconstruction
program following the present
conflict.
"The Jewish people, oppressed
and attacked because it repre-
sents a solid front in the demo-
cratic phalanx, is hopeful that
the end of the War will bring
its harrassed and homeless mil-
lions more than tolerance, sym-
pathy and pity," the Jewish
statesman said.
"We have a right to expect
the solution of the Jewish prob-
lem to be made part of the en-
tire program for post-war re-
construction," Dr. 1V eizmann
said. "It must not again be post-
poned, delayed or pigeonholed.
We make this demand because
we cannot contemplate a revival
of chaos in which the slightest
economic or political tremo• will
once again set off disturbances
using the Jews as scapegoates
and as weapons to shatter the
peace of the world. The United
Nations must face this problem
squarely. Shall they approach
the Jewish problem courageously
and seek a constructive solution
in the face of undeniable dif-
ficulties? Or shall they lay it
aside and risk the repetition of
rabid anti-Semitism hitched to
any political adventuerers that
might seek to emulate . Hitler in
the years to come?"
