DETROIT JEVeisti CHRONICLE and the Legal Chronicle

25 YEARS OF CANTOR
From a comedian to a states-
man is the distance traveled by
Eddie Cantor in the 25 years
he's been in show business . . .
It was a quarter of a century
a go that the pop-eyed singer-
ga gster started on his way to
real fame when Florenz Zieg-
feld hired him for the Follies.
, . . The theater is celebrating
the anniversary by remembering
that in all his years Eddie Can-
tor never did anyone any harm
a nd always did somebody some
good . • . An off-color joke
about the Jews rarely passed
Eddie's lips even though the
temptations to compete with fel-
low-Jews might have been
strong . . . Eddie never was a
one to think that the only place
for an actor was in the dressing
room . . . He knew that an
actor was also a human being
and shared in civic responsibili-
ties . . . Every American and
Jewish cause has had a friend
in Eddie . . . Most memorable
of his many gracious deeds was
the trip he took to England for
a whirlwind campaign for Youth
Aliyali after he had done a
swell job in this country . . .
A few years ago he often
cracked at the Nazis on his pro-
gram, and he gave up the re-
munerative spot rather than
knuckle under when Nazis be-
