PLACE TO FIGHT

One of the Nation's Great
Editors Views a Jewish
Army

By FULTON OURSLER
Editor-in-Chief of Liberty
Magazine

There appeared recently in the
New York Times a large adver-
tisement signed by "Committee
for a Jewish Army."
This Committee has a list of
distinguished Honorary Chairmen
including Dr. Samuel Harden
Church, Colonel John Henry Pat-
terson, D.S.O. and Pierre van
Paassen, who is national chair-
man. It includes in its member-
ship a long array of celebrater
persons representing many and
diverse fields of activity—from
Bishop Abbott of K en tucky
through George Hamilton Combs,
Jr., Lion Feuchtwanger, Congress-
man Hamilton Fish, Ben Hecht,
Kenneth Leslie, editor of the Pro-
testant Digest, Ernst Lubitsch of
Hollywood and Brock Pemberton
of Broadway, Bishop Stevens of
California, Lowell Thomas, Dr.
Ray Lyman Wilbur, president of
Stanford University, and Ad-
miral Yarnell.
•The object of this Committee
for a Jewish Army is stated in
these terms:

Balfour Declaration, the promise
of a homeland for the Jews in
Judea, Samaria and Galilee. He
got it by a great service to the
British cause. Many people have
forgotten that it was this same
Chaim Weizmann who invented
that destructive chemical com-
pound called TNT which helped
the Allies win the war.
For this he asked no money
and no honors. He wanted a home
for his people and Balfour prom-
ised that.
But while Balfour was making
this promise, another great Eng-
lishman was making other prom-
ises to the Arabs who considered
Palestine their home. Colonel
Lawrence of Arabia organized
the Moslems to fight the Ger-
mans—to lick them—on the des-
erts of Syria, in the mountains
of Lebanon, on Mount Carmel and
at Nazareth. Lawrence told the
Arabs they were to have a united
Arab kingdom. When the war
was over, well-intentioned states-
men tried to reconcile these two
promises.
The Jews were not satisfied,
nor were the Arabs. The result
flared up in guerilla warfare.

upon the welfare of the Jewish
community in the United States.

Glazer will preach.
Services for the last day of

School Spring Vacation

UNITED HEBREW SCHOOLS

The Detroit Committee for
Kashruth and the local Vaad
Ha-Rabbonim have issued an an-
nouncement relative to Passover
foods, in which they urge Jew-
ish consumers to beware of
Chometz (leavened) on the Fes-
tival. They ask that only such
products as are certified "kosh-
er "Pesach" by a recognized
rabbinical authority be taken
into the home.
The statement specifically de-
clares that no cakes or maca-
roons are baked in Detroit un-
der Passover regulations. No
local restaurant has accepted the
offer of the Kashruth Commit-
tee for the supervision of its
Passover preparations, hence
their food cannot be considered
kosher.
In their warning the Council
of Rabbis and leading laymen
associated with the Vaad Lemann
Ha-Kashruth further urge that
Jewish homes, during the eight
days of the Festival, use milk
only from those dairies whose
products are supervised in ac-
cordance with Passover regula-
tions. They also urge respect
for the sanctity of the holiday
by requesting the Jewish bak-
ers of Detroit to avoid the flag-
rant violation of the last day of
Pesach, and to refrain from
baking until Thursday night,
April 9.
Information on all questions
relating to Kashruth on Pass-
over and the year-around will
be supplied by the office of the
Detroit Committee for Kashruth,
8917 Twelfth St., Ty. 7-7585.
