Season's Greetings and Best Wishes
WASHINGTON (JPS)—In
Fort Boulevard
Recreation
Ford of California, speaking on
the floor of the House, taunted
Douglas by calling him "Melvyn
Ilesselberg" and a "pink" and a
"red." Congressman Jerry Voor-
his of California defended the
movie star now active in war
work.
The Ford attack, which verged
on anti-Semitism, was answered
by his California colleague, Voor-
his, who exclaimed: "I cannot
let the charges against Melvyn
Douglas go unanswered."
Defending the motion-picture
star, Voorhis asserted that Doug-
las "is not now and never has
been a Communist, nor is he a
friend of Communists." About
name-changing, Voorhis com-
mented that "most movie actors
have done so, however; and I
could name over dozens of peo-
ple, some of the best people in
the country, who have changed
their names, especially if they
were long ones."
Douglas defended himself by
saying that he expected to work
"without compensation." It had
been reported that he would be
an $8,000-a-year director.

Let Holland Solve Your
Home Heating Problems
Before you buy or build a home—
make sure it will be comfortable in
Winter. Do this by consulting the
Holland man in your locality. The
Holland representative is a heating
expert—capable of properly planning
your heating system or if your pres-
ent plant is not heating satisfactorily
he can tell you just what is wrong
and what to do to correct the trouble.

is largely a precautionary mess-
-despite the curious choice of the
ure. Such registration is not mere-
ly understandable—it was a mat-
te• of urgent necessity. It must be
kept in mind that until the Act
of 1940 there had never been a
registration of immigrants in the
United States. The administration
did not even know who the immi-
grants on its soil were. Under-
standably it desired to obtain this
information under the changed
circumstances. It ought to be em-
phasized that the real danger of
sabotage and other fifth-column
activity applies to a far higher
degree to the already naturalized
American citizens. Up to the most
recent legislation after the dec-
laration of war there were no
emergency measures in effect
against the last category, since
democratic tradition frowned on
such steps.
Thus there was no choice but
to limit action to those not yet
naturalized. It would seem as
though registration were to lay
the basis for their scrutiny in a
political sense.
One indication of this is found
on the questionnaire itself. That
is Question 15, which offers every
refugee the opportunity to explain
at length his attitude toward the
Fascist movements, in what man-
ner he himself was persecuted by
them, and whether they ever in
any manner testified to his opposi-
tion. In all likelihood, loss of
German citizenship by special de-
cree of the Hitler government
would constitute such testimony.
The Act of November 25, 1941,
depriving all Jewish emigres of
German citizens hip, probably
amounts to the same thing for all
later refugees. It may be neces-
sary to regard those thus "pun-
ished" as still being "of -German
nationality," but in the final clas-
sification there will be no getting
around the fact of their loss of
citizenship.
It is quite likely, therefore, that
the United States government pro-
poses in the end to make distinc-
tions among registered aliens.
These will probably not be based
on loss of citizenship alone, but
presumably on special investiga-
tions. It is to be assumed, that
unless special objectios are raised,
the fact of loss of citizenship will
be acknowledged. Though the gen-
eral designation of "enemy alien"
will be intolerable even to many
Germans who have not been de-
prived of their citizenship, it
would seem to be a downright con-
tradiction to stigmatize as "enemy
aliens" those who continued active
opposition to the Hitler govern-
ment even after leaving German
soil and often under very diffi-
cult conditions.
Most of them would be only
too willing to aid the American
government in its fight against
Nazi Germany, with advice based
on their intimate knowledge of
Nazi trickery and their familiar-
ity with conditions in Germany
generally. They are very unhappy
over the fact that at present
Washington is still treating their
offers with much skepticism, re-
jecting them by and large. But it
is their belief that in the course
of a war that may drag on for
a long time the attitude of the
American authorities will change.
It is not altogether impossible
that even Washington will become
convinced that while an Ameri-
can "background" is important for
a valid voice in things American,
a background shared with those
who are to be found is indis-
pensable in the struggle against
the Hitler government and Nazi
Germany generally.
True, it is quite possible that
during the further course of the
war specific animosity against cer-
tain categories of aliens may crys
tallize in American public opinion
as a result of special circum-
stances. But it seems much more
likely to me to expect that for
certain purposes the co-operation
of such non-Americans who dem-
onstrably cannot be regarded as
"enemy aliens" will be gladly ac-
cepted. I am hopeful that further
investigation of German refugees,
which cannot begin until registra-
tion is concluded, will yield val-
uable results in this respect.

Jailed for Thinking
Of Marrying "Aryan"
Sincere Season's Greetings
GENEVA (JPS) — For even
thinking of marrying an "Aryan
German girl" after the war ends,
a German Jew in Magdeburg
has been sentenced to five years'
imprisonment after facing trial
for this "crime." No evidence
of "Rassenschande," the "crime"
of racial intermarriage, was pre-
sented at the court, but the very
troth which the two lovers made,
as reported by the Magdeburg
Nazi newspaper which reported
the incident, was an affront to
the Nazi authorities.
That was swell of Jack Benny
to cancel his Sunday night "Jel-
lo" show in tribute to the mem-
ory of Carole Lombard, with
whom he made "To Be Or Not to
Be," still to be shown on the
nation's screens.
