OBITUARY

In 1923, after a visit to the
United States by the first Mayor
of Tel Aviv, the late Meyer
Dizengoff, C.B.E., a loan of £75,-
000 was raised with the assist-
ance of the Guarantee Trust
Company of New York for re-
payment in 20 years.
Jubilation reigned in Tel Aviv.
The first foreign loan has been
fully repaid. In the period since
the loan was taken, the city
has grown tremendously from a
population of 10,000 to almost
200,000. The first loan was a
fillip to this development.

Held Poland

NEW YORK (JPS) — Jews
have been able to obtain "cer-
tificates of pure Aryan descent"
in Nazi-held Poland, where cor-
ruption and greed are prevalent
among the German administrat-
ors and petty politicians, accord-
ing to the Polish Review, organ
of the Polish Information Cen-
ter, published here. The corrup-
tion has proceeded so far, the
Polish paper asserts, that reg-
ular rates are established for
each "favor" granted by the
Nazis.

J. N. F. Receipts Show Rise

JERUSALEM (Palcor) — Re-
ceipts of the Keren Kayemeth
(Jewish National Fund) for the
first four months of the Jewish
calendar year 5702 showed a
substantial increase over the in-
come during the parallel period
of 5701, it was announced here
yesterday.
The peak figure, attained dur-
ing the four months from Oc-
tober, 1941 through January,
1942, reached £196,000, com-
pared with £163,000 during the
same period last year.
The bulk of the income, the
report declares, still comes from
the United States, whose £124,-
000 contribution amounted to
approximately 63 per cent.
Leasehold rents, which brought
in £6,000, were double those of
last year's same period, while
land acquisitions also rose. It
was recalled that the present
year, which marke the fortieth
anniversary of the J.N.F., finds
the Fund's holdings at 575,000
dunams.
