to accept either the authority or
the policies of the Zionist move-
ment."
The call follows up the an-
nouncement by Senator Robert
F. Wagner of New York, Chair-
man of the American Palestine
Committee, of the receipt by
him of several hundred messages
from distinguished American
leaders urging the immediate im-
plementation of the proposal for
a Jewish fighting force, in view
of the adverse turn which the
Libyan campaign has taken and
the reverses which the arms of
the United Natons have suffered
in the South Pacific. Organized
Zionists and the constituted Zion-
ist authorities are summoned by
the proclamation to impress po-
litical and civic leaders through-
out the country with the urgency
of the proposal.

N. Y. Times Issues Shertok
Statement Favoring Jewish Army
NEW YORK (JPS)—That the
New York Times editorial op-
posing the formation of a Jew-
ish Army "has created the most
painful impression among Jews
in Palestine" has been revealed
by Moshe Shertok, chief of the
Political Department of the Jew-
ish Agency for Palestine, in a
statement published here by the
Times.
"The reasons that demand the
establishment of a Jewish Army,"
the Jewish leader asserted, "are
twofold. First, the Jews were
the first people attacked by Hit-
ler and suffered more than any
others at his hands. They have
been called upon and are en-
titled to make their contribution
to the Allied war effort as a
people.
"Every Allied nation, however
small, from the Free Danes to
the Druses of Syria and the
Senusis of Libya, is fighting
under its own flag and there is
no reason why just Jews should
be required to fight anonymously
and subjected to the indignity
of obliteration of their iden-
tity."
As a second reason, Shertok
cited that "only by the forma-
tion of a Jewish Army can the
maximum Jewish enthusiasm and
contribution to , the Allied war
effort be elicited."
Mr. Shertok, the Times report-
ed, declared that it was "utterly
unreal" to believe after the ex-
perience of this generation that
the hopes of the Jews could be
achieved, as suggested in the
editorial, by assurance of full
civic rights.
"The legal guarantees of the
Weimar Constitution (of the
German Republic)," he said.
"did not prevent the rights and
positions of German Jewry from
being swept away within a few
months by the Nazi regime."
Emphasizing that Hitler had
utilized animosities based on the
"abnormal position" of the Jews
as a homeless people, Shertok
said that, if anti-Semitism is to
be obliterated, the Jewish prob-
lem "must be attacked at the
root, which is the homelessness
of the Jews as a people.
"Once that is solved," the
Jewish leader declared, "by the
re-establishment of the Jewish
nation in Palestine individual
Jews living among other people
will no more be the object of
persecution or ahtred than the
members of any other nation
living abroad.
"It is incomprehensible that
the New York Times should in-
voke the Atlantic Charter to sup-
port its anti-Zionist attitude,
since the Charter pledges the
Allied Nations to respect the
right of all peoples to choose the
form of government under which
they will live. There can be no
doubt of the resolution of the
overwhelming majority of Jews
to put an end to their present
precarious position in the world."
He stressed that "Palestine is
the only country which on the
basis of sixty years' colonization
is capable of offering large
masses of Jews not merely pre-
carious shelter but a permanent
home among their own people."

These certificates will be used
to rescue refugees, who fled be-
fore Hitler's armies and who are
now stranded in the Soviet
Union, India, Turkey, Afghani-
stan and Iran, awaiting permis-
sion to continue to Palestine.
When they reach Palestine, those
under 36 eligible for military
service will be recruited by the
Jewish Agency for the British
army, thus following the exam-
ple of 15,000 Palestinian Jews
now serving in the Middle East.
Others will be trained with the
aid of the United Palestine Ap-
peal to take their places in Pal-
estine's war industries and mod-
ern farms, which have made the
Jewish homeland the granary
and arsenal of the United Na-
tions in the Middle East.
37,000 Came Since 1939
Since the invasion of Poland
in 1939 some 37,000 Jews from
Central and Eastern Europe
have found a permanent home
in Palestine, bringing to a total
of 300,000 the number of Jew-
ish refugees who came to Pales-
tine since the beginning of the
Nazi regime in Germany, through
the aid of the United Palestine
Appeal.
When the Jewish Agency ap-
plied for 6,000 certificates, it
emphasized the need for more
skilled as well as agricultural
labor to fill the war orders of
the Middle East Office of Sup-
ply. Many of the refugees now
stranded in Asiatic countries
awaiting permission to continue
the journey to Palestine are
skilled workers from Greek,
Czech and Polish factories.
There are ironmongers who
can aid in the work of repairing
Allied ships in Haifa harbor,
stevedores from Salonics to un-
load cargoes, mechanics to be
added to the transport and re-
pair corps, and experienced fac-
tory hands for the Jewish in-
dustries pouring out an unend-
ing stream of textile, mechan-
ical, electrical, pharmaceutical
and other supplies needed by
the military.
Others have been trained in
Europe for agricultural labor in
preparation for emigration to
Palestine. They are ready to
take their places beside the Jew-
ish farmers laboring valiantly
to multiply acreage for the grow-
ing food needs of the Allied
forces.
These, together with the Jew-
ish soldiers and pioneers now
fighting on the battlefields of the
Middle East, will strengthen that
important front for any even-
tuality during the coming
months.

cations of the killing of Abra-

Husseini Bids for Moslem
Anti-Jewish Congress
LONDON (JPS) Adolf Hit-
ler, with the active collaboration
of Haj Amin el Husseini, ex-Muf-
ti of Jerusalem, is extending his
bid for Moslem aid in an anti-
British and anti-Jewish cam-
paign, Free French circles here
stated. According to the De
Gaullists, Hitler has instructed
the ex-Mufti to convoke in
French North Africa a Moslem
conference which would center
on an anti-democratic theme.
De Gaullist forces are making
every effort to disrupt the effec-
tiveness of this proposed con-
ference.
The projected conference sug-
gested by the Axis powers re-
calls the Pan-Arabic conference
which Emir Feisal, Foreign Min-
ister of Saudi-Arabia, which is
Britain's strongest Arabic sup-
porter in the Near East, recent-
ly proposed as a means to co-
ordinate and effectuate anti-Axis
feeling among the Moslem na-
tions.

BNAI BRITH

(Continued from Page 1)

Oct. 13, 1843. In each decade
since its founding, it has shown
the way for American Jewry,
whether the need was for phil-
anthropy, Americanism, youth-
character building work, defense
against defamation, or the posi-
tive cultural values of Judaism
itself.
In our own time, Bnai Brith
was among the first of the pri-
vate organizations to put itself
and its membership at the full
disposal of the government for
whatever service they could ren-
der in the interest of national
defense. At the very beginning
of the emergency, Bnai Brith's
position was enunciated by its
national president Henry Mon-
sky, who said in part: "Some
of us will be called upon to pro-
tect that security by serving in
the armed forces of our nation.
Others will be asked to give of
their technical and professional
talents. Still others will be

looked upon to give of their
material resources. But in what-
ever way we may be able to
serve, serve we must. Service to
the country in this hour is an
unprecedented opportunity for
patriotism in action." At that
time a National Defense Com-
mittee was created, the entire
manpower and machinery of over
900 Bnai Brith units were
geared to cooperate with the
Red Cross, close cooperation
with the Jewish Welfare Board,
aid to the U.S.O., the purchase
of Defense Bonds and Stamps
by the Supreme Lodge, District
Grand Lodge individual lodges
and its members.
The normal activities of Bnai
Brith lodges, all its agencies and
its institutions will carry on as
they are part and parcel of the
free way of life, such as the
Anti-Defamation League, Hillel
Foundations, the junior organi-
zation, A.Z.A., Bnai Brith's Vo-
cational Service Bureau, hospit-
als, orphanages, homes for the
aged that dot the land. There is
a Bnai Brith colony in Palestine.
