6 DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and the Legal Chronicle Dr. Maurice Perlzweig to Address Jewish Center Lecture Series Jan. 27 The chairman of the British Section of the World Jewish Con- gress, Dr. Maurice L. Perlzweig, will be the guest speaker in the Jewish Community Center lecture series, on Tuesday evening, Jan. 27, at 8:30. Fourth lecturer in the 1942 series, devoted to a dis- cussion of the Jewish situation today and an analysis of what is to be expected tomorrow, Dr. Perlzweig's topic will be, "A Look at the Jewish Tomorrow." He will be introduced by Judge Charles Rubiner, former Center president, who will serve as chair- man of the evening. Friend and associate of the late Dr. Claude G. Montefiore, of Israel Zangwill and the first Lord Reading, Dr. Perlzweig is an honor graduate of University College, London and of Christ College, Cambridge, where he received honors in Oriental Languages. He entered the rabbinate in 1921 to become a minister of the Liberal Jewish Synagogue of London and recently served as minister of the Northwestern Reform Synagogue in London. For it was Admiral Taussig who predicted the Pearl Harbor attack. In the spring of 1940 he warned that the Japanese sought virtual domination of the Far East and would even go to war to attain their aim. The repercussions from that war n i ng were many. Even President Roosevelt, whose dis- favor Taussig had incurred, threatened to furlough the Ad- mirals Stark and Nimitz, who opposed any discipline. Stark and Nimitz must have known then, as the entire country knows today, that Taussig was right. His views were the pri- vate opinions of practically every officer in the Navy. In his testimony before the committee, Taussig—whose father before him, Edward David Taus- sig, scion of a St. Louis Jewish family, was a rear admiral— urged the immediate establishment of an "impregnable" naval base in the Philippines, the strengthen- ing of the Navy and agreement with the English, the Dutch and the French guaranteeing the safety of the Pacific.
