Government in Exile looks to the restora-
tion of rights for Jews on a full and equal
basis at the end of the war."
A better example, perhaps, is the mul-
tiplicity of claims to "credit" made by
many organizations whenever a refugee
group is saved. All get on the band-
wagon in search for recognition.
Let some of the groups in American
Jewish life stop searching for capital for
themselves, and let some of their leaders
stop boasting. Let us, instead, unite for
proper work for the amelioration of Jew-
ish sufferings. The American Jewish com-
munity will then be the happier and Jew-
ish hope for the future will be better
sustained.
Facts and figures being made public
at this time indicate that Palestine stands
in the front ranks of the countries de-
fending the democratic idea, and that the
Jewish settlements are serving as an ar-
senal for the British forces. They are
providing necessities of life—including
food and medicaments—and are manu-
facturing articles vital for military pur-
poses.
It is important, therefore, that nothing
should be done to impair the growth of
these settlements, and that there should
be no setback to the efforts of the Jew-
ish builders of Eretz Israel.
Recently, a conference of the United
Palestine Appeal was held in Akron, 0.,
and former United States Senator Wil-
liam H. King of Utah pointed out that
"it was an act of the highest patriotism
to maintain our gallant Jewish allies
fighting the democratic fight on the Mid-
dle East front." Former Senator King
continued to state:

The former head of the Vaad Leumi,

was the engineering genius who harnessed

He was the co-founder, while in the

the late Justice Louis D. Brandeis, Dr.
Stephen S. Wise, Judge Julian W. Mack
and a group of other leaders, of the
American Jewish Congress.
He was a member of Alexander Keren-

OUR BOYS TAKE OVER
BROADWAY
If to keep 'em happy • is the
first law of national morale, our
boys are doing their bit on
Broadway. Look at the shows
that opened in just one week.
First was Eddie Cantor's "Banjo
Eyes," which got him the biggest
critical salutes since he started
show business in pre-War I days.
Izzy Ellinson helped write the
book and Vernon Duke (Vladimir
Dukelsky) did the • music. Harry
Horner did the magnificent sets
and Irene Sharaff the costumes.
And Lionel Stander runs Eddie
a good second for laughs. . . .
High-brow show of the week was
Clifford Odets' "Clash By Night,"
which the critics took' apart only
to find that the performances were
great, with little else inside.
We're glad they gave some good
lines to Joseph Schildkraut, who's
been Broadway's most misunder-
stood man since "Liliom." Lee J.
Cobb turns in his best show to
date, while Lee Strasberg did the
stage and Boris Aronson the set-
tings . . . Howard Koch collabor-
ated with John Huston on "In
Time to Come," the Wilson bio-
graphical play that the critics
were nice to, as to a favorite
grandmother. Bernard Randall
does a nice job as Judge Bran-
deis, while Arnold Korff was res-
cued from Hollywood to do Mon-
sieur Pichon. Harry Horner
showed his versatility by doing
the sets. Direction is by Otto
Preminger, who'll be remembered
for his great direction and act-
ing in "Margin for Error." Pre-
'flinger is one of Hitler's finest
gifts to America, his swell work
including the direction of "Libel,"
"Outward Bound" and "My Dear
Children," among others . . . And
as if that weren't enough, "Letters
to Lucerne," newest juvenile hit,
was written by Fritz Hotter, with
Allen Vincent. That's a shining
performance turned in by Sonya
Stokowski, who is one of a group
of wonderful youngsters, includ-
ing Grete Mosheim, Lille Skala
and Alfred T. Hesse. Miss Mos-
heim's great scene comes when
she reads a letter from her moth-
er in Germany. When she's
through reading those lines of
terror in Naziland, there isn't a
dry eye in the house.
ALL FOR DEFENSE
Salaam to the Yiddish hour on
New York's Station WHOM,
which adapted the Texas-born
idea and calls on listeners to send
in a penny for every enemy
plane knocked out by the "keep-
cm-flying" boys. Over 500 Yid-
dish fans told the radio station
they would be listening in on the
score and shooting in the coin.
The number of pledgers is mount-
ing, with the pennies going to
Henry Morgenthau's big bank.
Keep shootin"em down, fellas!
Belle Baker, whose .songs still
tug at the heart, turned down a
series of night club engagements
to be in New York with her son,
Herbert, 20-year-old youngster
who's enlisted with the American
Army. Can't believe Louis Fal-
kenstein, of Chicago's HiHat Club,
would go through with his threat-
ened suit for cancellation of the
show. Herbert's been writing show
scripts for his mama since he
graduated from Yale last June.
As soon as Miss Baker dries her
tears for her only son's de-
parture, she'll be right back mak-
ing Americans keep their chins
up.
AFTER TEN YEARS
Next week the former colleagues
of Lewis Browne will be getting
their annual choleric outburst, be-
cause that is when his new book,
"Something \Vent Wrong," will
be published. It seems the rabbis
can never forgive the slouching
author for having deserted the
rabbinate and gone out and made
himself independent. His new
book has been in the works for
10 years. Maybe that's because
Lewis writes his books by long-
hand and "Something Went
Wrong" went through 10 differ-
ent drafts. If you're a friend
of Browne's, you've known about
the book for 10 years, because the
way he gets an idea of how the
book is going is to read it to
friends.
ABOVE THE ROAR
David ben Gurion, Palestine's
chairman of the Jewish Agency
Executive, is thinking of setting
up shop at Washington for the
duration, with the Capitol the
hub of the world's postwar plan-
ning.
Put a bet on it that the Coun-
cil of Federations and Welfare
Funds, which is still licking its
wounds from a similar effort in
1941, is going to try to put
through its national budgeting
plan at the Chicago conference
at the end of this month. The
men responsible for planning the
move feel they can drown any
opposition by appealing to the
patriotic unity of the nation, and
are hoping everybody will be too
interested in other matters to
notice the putting over of this
job. It's amazing the silly things
people can do, even in wartime.
Cooing between Zionists and
non-Zionists for a hands-across-
the-table pact for peace planning
is getting sweeter and sweeter.
One of the reasons is that Amer-
ican Zionists in 1942 don't use
the same vocabulary their pre-
decessor, Herzl, did 40 years ago.
And not because the words don't
still mean the same thing.
Editor Stout of the Saturday
Evening Post- is promising him-
self it'll be a long time before
he touches on any more Jewish
topics, considering the terrific
amount of condemnatory mail he
got on the Jerome Frank article
—which, he had thought, would
make all the Jews happy.
