Every nation fighting on the side of the democracies was given a place on the splendid program that was sponsored by the Council for Democracy on Christmas Day. That program could have been en- hanced by mere mention of the Jews as partners in this great struggle to re-estab- lish sanity in the world. We have an im- portant stake in the war, and we shall no doubt have to continue to place em- phasis on certain claims which demand guarantees that our rights will not be sacrificed at the end of this war. To be completely ignored, therefore, is a rather ignoble thing to do, especially in a pro- gram for good will and democratic ac- tion. That very day, there were broadcasts of messages from parents in England to their evacuated children in Canada and the United States. One message wished the child "a happy Chanukah and a merry Christmas"—overlooking the fact that Chanukah was by that time over by three days. The spirit of the message, however, was important, by contrast with the inexcusable oversight of the Council for Democracy. The Late David Yellin DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and the Legal Chronicle the front ranks of necessary projects to guarantee an unbroken chain of activity against the Axis. Without the efforts of the Histadruth, the Palestinian front would be weak and ineffecti% c. It is the effort put forth by the powerful Jewish labor organization in Palestine in training its workers for defense that has made Palestine an ar- senal for the democracies in the Mediter- ranean. Without Jewish efforts in Pal- estine the British forces would have been unable to secure the $12,000,000 worth of supplies during 1941. Jewish Palestine is the backbone in the defense of the Suez and of the Middle East. A strong Palestine will mean a strong democratic front in the Middle East; a weak Palestine will place the British campaign against the Axis in jeopardy. Jews are therefore obligated to strengthen the position of the Palestinian settlement. Every appeal for Palestine— whether it is for the Histadruth through the Gewerkshaften or for the food-pro- ducing colonies through the Jewish Na- tional Fund—is an additional appeal for the defense of the democracies. Histadruth and Gewerkshaften spell specific Jewish cooperation in the battle against tyranny and totalitarianism In the world. Every Jewish contribution to the Red Cross and for relief should ba supplemented with gifts to the Jewish relief and Palestinian causes. The Late Dr. Nathan Isaacs Detroiters will recall the addresses de- livered here on several occasions by Dr. Nathan Isaacs, professor of business law at Harvard University and lecturer at other schools, including Yale and Colum- bia. His death, at the age of 55 comes as a shock to those who had learned to ad- mire his Jewish devotion and his scholar- ship. Dr. Isaacs came from a very devout Jewish family in Cincinnati. All native Americans, they were nevertheless steeped in orthodoxy and never found it necessary to break a single orthodox Jewish law. Five brothers rose to high professional positions—and all of them adhered loyally to their faith, at the same time remaining uncompromising in their American pat- riotism. The late Dr. Nathan Isaacs was at one time assistant dean of the Cincinnati Law School. He was active in Jewish affairs, was a delegate to the First World Jewish Congress in Geneva, was president of the Association for Jewish Culture and Edu- cation, was a Captain in the U. S. Army during the First World War, was a trus- tee of Gimbel Bros., held other important positions and was the author of several important books and essays. Those who knew him will miss him greatly, because they know what an asset he was to American Jewry. Palestine has emerged as more than a homeland. It is a great romance. And its romantic qualities stem from the people who have created its institutions and have established its idealism as a basis for re- constructing a people's existence. The late Dr. David Yellin, whose death occurred three weeks ago, was one of the most fascinating figures in this ro- mantic story. He was a third generation Jerusalemite and to him the events occur- ring in Eretz Israel were natural phen- omena. His Hebraism was natural, He- brew being his mother tongue, although he knew Arabic, English, Yiddish and other tongues well. This statement has been merely part of the The Palestine Labor Drive stage build-up of the Leader. In 1935 1 was told by one of the greatest medical men in the Reich that in 1932 he had himself investigated Hitler's official medical war record. It consisted of one hos- pital admission: Diagnosis: "hysterical am- bloyopia," i. c., blindness due to hysterical fear-reaction. In 1934 my friend found this record no longer existed. January 2, 1942 .'.Heard in the Lobbies:. By DAVID DEUTSCH WASHINGTON ECHOES Pretty strict orders were given to Winston Churchill not to be indiscreet on Jewish affairs while he's in Washington. His civil servants are afraid his heart is where his head should be. The diplomatic boys for Britain were quite shocked, indeed, when they heard about the quite innocuous letter which Churchill sent to the London Chronicle on the occasion of its centenary with brief refer- ences to the hope of Jews when the day of victory dawns. Maxim Litvinoff may be on hand for information on Soviet strength and plans but it's Lau- rence Steinhardt whom the State Department is consulting. Rumor is still strong that Steinhardt is pretty fed up with the diplomatic business and would like to go back to the nice, peaceful law. But F. D. R. doesn't let his good men go so easily and it's likely a new, heavy assignment will soon be announced for Steinhardt . When the censorship department starts working, one of the Wash- ington boys who'll have to watch his step is Arthur Krock, the white-haired correspondent of the New York Times, who has been given credit for more smashing of confidences than any other top- flight. reporter. One Army official almost burst a blood vessel when he saw a recent issue of the New York Times carrying a story that he thought he had told somebody in strictest confidence. Exact op- posites are Krock and I. F. Stone, former New York Post editor and now commentator for liberal week- lies and PM. One of the differ- ences is that Stone doesn't mind being known as a Jew. NEWSPAPER BUSINESS The Yiddish newspapers, for whom an early demise has been predicted for 20 or 30 years, are having a pretty tough time these days and they're talking about upping the price per paper. Big- gest blow to the papers has been their inability to tell the folks about the people on the other side. With all the pogroms, de- portations and retreats, relatives here are worried. But if they want any information they have to apply to one of the official 'Jewish organizations or to the Red Cross In the olden days when wars were fought gentleman-like, the Yiddish papers could print long lists of "missing relatives" and "searching friends." The im- migration of Hitler days has not been a Yiddish-reading element. It takes to such papers as Aufban or starts at once on the English dailies, which the other genera- tions didn't learn for quite a while. orations and Welfare Funds; (2) that Dr. Abba Hillel Silver Will be given the accolade of re-elec- tion as chairman of the United Palestine Appeal when his organ- ization meets in Cleveland on Jan. 18; (3) that someone ap- proved by Rabbi James G. It's too crowded and nobody is looking at Jews these days. CONGRATULATIONS To Jan Peerce who, having made his Metropolitan Opera de- but, is proving the old adage that success makes success. ODDS AND ENDS Charles Laughton and Milton Berle get along quite well on their air show, but the thing that makes Laughton boil is the way Milton keeps on calling him "Chuck."
