The 30th anniversary of the
founding of the Mizrachi move-
ment is being celebrated in the
United States this month.
Detroit participated in the cele-
bration with a banquet at the
Fort Wayne Hotel on Dec. 7.
Meyer Beckman, president of
Detroit Mizrachi, stated that the
Mizrachi movement has awakened
in the Jews of the world the
realization that Palestine must be
built upon religious principles.
Rabbi Max Kirshblum of New
York, who was the guest speaker,
emphasized the need of preserv-
ing Jewish traditions, and decried
such spokesmen as Jerome Frank
who inferentially attack the reli-
gious branch of the Zionist move-
ment. He praised the movement
statrted in Detroit to close Jew-
ish bakeshops and groceries on
the Sabbath.
Irving Schlussel was the toast-
master of the evening and Rabbi
Isaac Stollman addressed the
guests in the name of Agudas
Harabonim.
Cantor Jacob Sonenklar ren-
dered appropriate songs accom-
panied on the piano by his daugh-
ter. Helen Sloan played on the
accordion.
Mr. Beckman expressed sincere
thanks to The Detroit Jewish
Chronicle for publicizing the
event.

Sweden Resents "No Jew" Sign

a

GENEVA (JPS) — When a
Stockholm bookstore displayed
a window sign reading "No Jews
or half-Jews permitted," the pub-
lic indignation became so great,
the Swedish press reports, that
a squad of police had to be sum-
moned to protect the proprietor
and his goods.
Civic leaders called on the gov-
ernment to ban the sign, which
the bookstore owner had defiant-
ly replaced several times, once
when it had been painted over
during the night and then again
when the window had smashed
and the offensive warning re-
moved by outraged passers-by.
Out of a total population of
over 6,000,000 in Sweden, some
4,000 are Jews.
