Reports Flow of Material of War
to Palestine • •
' NEW YORK (JPS) — Vast
supplies of tanks of all sizes,
Bren gun carriers, armored cars,
anti-aircraft gunds, artillery and
munitions are moving into Pal-
estine, according to a report to
the United Press from its Bei-
rut, Lebanon correspondent.
At the paid up membership
luncheon of the Ladies' Auxiliary
of the Jewish National Fund,
held at the Jewish Community
Center on Tuesday, Dec. 16, Mrs.
William Hordes, chairman of the
membership drive, announced that
175 women have joined the ranks
of the Auxiliary during the cam-
paign.
Rabbi Morris Adle r, guest
speaker, urged the continuation
of land redemption, as Palestine
is the only star of hope for mil-
lions of oppressed people in Eu-
rope. "We must keep lines of
communication open and not sur-
render our pride and hope," the
speaker continued.
The musical program was ren-
dered by Leo Holinstat, talented
young violinist, with Lucia Wal-
ton at the piano.
The meeting also marked the
launching of the 11th annual
fund raising event to be held on
March 11. Mrs. Philip Cutler is
again asuming the chairmanship.
The first luncheon rally will be
held on Jan. 20.

Report 340 Jews Escaped Croatia,
Joined Guerrillas
ISTANBUL. (JPS) — A re-
markable story of escape and he-
roism is being told by the Turk-
ish press here concerning a group
of 340 Jewish men and women
who fled a concentration camp
and joined a guerrilla band of
fighters in Serbia.
The details are as follows:
Three hundred Jewish men and
40 Jewish girls who had been ar-
rested and sent to the concentra-
tion camp in Niratehar, Croatia,
managed to get together and ef-
fect an escape from the camp.
They joined the guerrilla band of
fighters under General Dr. Draja
Mikhailovitch, who is leading the
fight against the Nazis in Serbia.
The Germans were so enraged
by the escape of the Jews that
they executed six Jewish super-
visors of the camp. The 340 Jews
are, however, at liberty and are
doing their part to inflict tremen-
dous losses on the Germans in
Yugoslavia.

OH, TO BE A PARENT!
You wouldn't believe it could
happen, but it did. There was a
great deal of earnest squabbling
at a recent meeting of the Amer-
ican Jewish Press Club as to the
sex of an English-Jewish news-
paper. It all began when some-
one tried to pay tribute to the
London • Jewish Chronicle as the
"father" of English-Jewish jour-
nal:sm. "Father?" cried one hor-
rified lady. "I think it should
be called the mother of etc., etc."
Whereupon one news-tickler hu-
morist, Martin Panzer, interject-
ed a much-needed. note -of lev-
ity. Said Mr. Panzer: "I have
always received the Chronicle
second-class mail." Well, the lady
did not get the joke nor did many
of the other bright young men
and women of the Jewish pub-
licity and newspaper world. The
result, believe it or not, was a
compromise. So help me, they
changed the word to "parent".
. . . Incidentally, a great deal of
criticism and dissatisfaction is
growing at the way the press
agents have taken over the Press
Club and left the English-Jewish
writers and editors pretty much
out in the cold. It all stems from
the fact that while the press
ae:ents are all concentrated in
New York, the editors are scat-
tered throughout the country and
have no way of making their voice
heard or influence felt.

LONDON. (IPS)—The full im- refugees in the city, according to
pact of American-Japanese war
hit the Jewish refugees in Shang-
hai as 1,800 refugees from Ger-
many and Poland were arrested
by Nipponese officials following
the outbreak of hostilities, accord-
ing to Nazi-inspired Vichy
sources.
Half of the arrested Jews had
recently arrived in the port city
from Kobe, Japan, where , they
had sought refuse after the Nazi
invasion of Poland, Many of these
Jews are rabbis and yeshiva stu-
dents.
Other Axis sources reported
that the Japanese authorities have
blocked all deposits of the Jewish
refugees in Shanghai banks. They
have been ordered to appear in
person at Japauese police stations
and to register there. It is ex-
pected that soon after the regis-
tration all Jewish refugees will
be interned.
The Japause have assumed
reports in Swedish newspapers
here. The Swedish press also
claims that complete panic reigns
among the refugees in Shanghai
since the outbreak of the war.
The two American representa-
tives of the Joint Distribution
Committee in Shanghai, Laura L.
Margolis of Pittsburgh and Man-
uel liegel of • Boston, have been
reported safe. As of last month,
up to 14,000 persons were receiv-
ing aid from the JDC in the
Shanghai area.
Many Jews living in the Brit-
ish and American settlements in
Shanghai wanted to leave for the
French settlement when the Japs
occupied the British and Ameri-
can areas. The French authorities,
puzzled about the situation, con-
tacted Vichy for orders and were
told that under no circumstances
were Jews to be allowed to enter
the French settlement
