CENTER TO COMMENCE JEWISH
LECTURE SERIES TUESDAY, JAN 6 Chanukah Affair
On Sunday, Dec. 21
Continuing Tuesday evening Labor in England, America, and
cultural series, Prof. Otto Kline-
berg, anthropologist and psycholo-
gist, will lecture in the first of
the third annual Jewish lecture
series, Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 8:30
p. m.
Prof. Klineberg's projects have
taken him to France, Germany,
Italy, Mexico and China. Pro-
fessor in Columbia University's
psychology department, he will
leak on "Mass Psychology and
War."
For five successive Tuesdays,
five outstanding personalities are
being brought to Detroit. Fol-
lowing Professor Klineberg, will
be Joseph Schlossberg, general
secretary - treasurer emeritus of
the Amalgamated Clothing Work-
ers of America and member of
the Board of Higher Education
of New York, who will speak on
the subject "The New Role of
Palestine."
Prof. Salo W. Baron will ap-
pear on Jan. 2. He occupies the
Nathan Miller chair of Jewish
history, literature, and institu-
tions at Columbia University and
is the author of the three volume
work, "A Social and Religious
History of the ews." The lecture
subject will be "The Jew in a
Changing Economic Order."
Two speakers, Dr. Maurice L.
Perlzweig and Dr. Max Gott-
schalk, will discuss the position
of the Jew in the post war world.
Dr. Perlzweig, noted British lib-
eral rabbi, and active in the work
of the World Jewish Congress,
will speak Jan. 27. Dr. Gott-
schalk, who is director of the
Research Institute of Peace and
Post - War Problems f o r the
American Jewish Committee, will
speak Feb. 3.

Young Judaean members of
the intermediate and junior
groups and their leaders are pre-
paring a program to be presented
at the annual Chanukah celebra-
tion on Sunday, Dec. 2i, at 2:30
p. m., at the Rose Sittig Cohen
'Bldg., Lawton and Tyler Ayes.
Miss Evelyn Eiselman, chair-
man from the Leaders Council
for this affair, announces that
the program will consist of the
following:
The traditional blessing of the
Chanukah lights will be given by
a boy member of Young Judaea
and pupil of the United Hebrew
Schools. Poems relating to Chan-
ukah will be recited by mem-
bers of the Kadimah Group. Sev-
eral selections on the accordion
will be given by Helen Sloan of
the Hatkivah Group. An "Infor-
mation Please" quiz will be con-
ducted and participated in by
members of the Hatikvah and
Bnos Yehudah groups. The story
and historical significance of
Chanukah will be presented by
members of the Bnos Yehudah
Groun in novel form. An acrous-
tic drill will be given by the
Kadimah Group. The senior Lil-
lian Wald Group has been in-
vited to present a play, directed
by the leader, Zena Etkin. An
original musical comedy will be
presented, using the Chanukah
theme set to popular tunes of the
day, written by members of the
Emma Lazarus Group in colla-
boration with their leader, Miss
Annette Isaacs and directed by
Miss Isaacs.
The program will be followed
by community singing, featuring
Chanukah and Palestinian songs
and dances, and refreshments will
be served.
Parents, friends, and boys and
girls between the ages of 10 and
18 are invited to attend this
party.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hoffman of

This meeting took the form of
a memorial for Rachel Gorelick,
beloved mother, who passed away
Nov. 10. The meeting began with
expressions from the president,
Jake Gorelick.
Committees were selected as
follows: executive, Lou Stillman,
Phil Kramer, Morris Wolk, Phil-
lip, Jack C. and Louis Gorelick;
entertainment, Sally Kramer,
Jack L. Gorelick; publicity, Dor-
othy Wolk; social, Florence Gore-

On Dec. 14, Congregation Bnai
Israel of Pontiac, held its an-
nual Chanukah dinner.
Rabbi I. Strauss delivered an
address on the subject "The
Power of the Spirit."
On Sunday, Dec. 21, at 2
p. m., members of the Hebrew
school will present a Chanukah
dramatic performance. The Sis-
terhood of the congregation will
serve refreshments to the stu-
dents. The following pupils will
take active part in the play:
Mikell Davis, Charles Silverman,
Harold Blumenow, Eddy Con-
quer, Fay and Shirley Messing,
Betty and Airing Jacobsin, Wil-
liam Goodman, Manning Sander,
Sheldon Clinney, Conrad Good,

Meet on Tuesday
The next meeting of the Wo-
men's Auxiliary of the Maimod-
ides Medical Society will be a
dessert luncheon, with Mah Jong
and cards, and will be held Tues-

Dr. Yellin was, at the time of
his death, active in defense woi
in the Yishuv. For many years
he had been chairman of the
Vaad Leumi and active in °thy!!
communal and cultural work in
Palestine.
Dr. Yellin was, together with
Eliezer ben Yehuda, one of the
founders of the Hebrew lan-
guage committee, which was
largely responsible for the renais
sance of the Holy Tongue in
Eretz Israel. He published sev
eral valuable text books and was
one of the first teachers in the
country who taught Hebrew as
a living language. A profound
scholar, Dr. Yellin was always
part of the events of his day. 1n
1940 he headed a Jerusalem Kt-
hilla delegation which called on
the Jerusalem District Commis-
sions offering support to the gov-
ernment for the Allied cause.
The previous year he had re-
turned the Order of the British
Empire to High Commissioner

against British policy in Pales-
tine.

Campaign Meeting
JERUSALEM. (JPS-Palcor)-
The showing of a film depicting
scenes of the life and death of
Menahem Ussishkin, late presi-
dent of the Jewish National Fund,
featured the first meeting of the
Fund's Ussishkin Campaign Com-
mittee. Showing the veteran Zion-
ist as he appeared at various
World Zionist Congresses and on
visits to the Emek and other Jew-
ish settlements, the motion pic-
ture was viewed by representa-
tives of the various national in-
stitutions and the Chief Rab-
binate.
