Warfield Is 75

NEW YORK. (JPS) — David
Warfield, one of the most be-
loved figures in the American
theater, whose performance in
"The Music Master" is still re-
garded as one of the highlights
of American staging, celebrated
his 75th birthday on Nov. 28.
Having retired in 1924 after a
tour in "The Merchant of Ven-
ice," in which he endeavored to
portray Shylock in a sympathetic
role, Warfield has kept abreast
of the events of the world and of
the show business in which he
spent his life. He likes to visit
musical comedies n order to drown
out the madness of Europe, he
says.

Detroit Symphony Orchestra
to Present Sidney Foster,
Pianist, Here Dec. 13

Sidney Foster, the young pian-
ist from South Carolina who has
been dubbed "The Winner," be-
cause of his ability to carry
away first prize in competitions,
will make his debut appearance
with the Detroit Symphony Or-
chestra at the pop concert of Sat-
urday night, Dec. 13, in Masonic
Auditorium. To make his debut
doubly interesting, this 22-year-
old keyboard wizard will play
the Tschaikovsky First Concerto
in b-flat Minor, the classic from
which the most popular tune of
the moment is taken. Incidentally,
it is this same Concerto with
which Vladimir Horowitz last
season here electrified a packed
house.
Victor Kolar, who will conduct
the concert, has established some
sort of record in making this
program, for all three of the
purely orchestral works sched-
uled will be played for the first
time by the orchestra.

swing.

In Rumania many thousands
have been tortured and mur-
dered, first by the Iron Guards
and now by the occupying troops
in the reconquered territories;
while most of the Jewish prop-
erty has been confiscated.
There are also forebodings of
new persecutions in France.
After all the "legal" measures
against the Jews in unoccupied
France and the usual vexations,
arrests and imprisonments in
concentration camps of many
thousands of Jews in occupied
France, there seems to be some-
thing "bigger" in preparation.
