like the fabled somnambulist, but
with hearts attuned to the heroic
past and eyes fixed upon the
future. Such a conception im-
plies a willingness to accept fate
and to make the most of it. Ju-
daism is not a misfortune but
an opportunity in this sort' of
world-outlook. Jewish education
rightfully becomes the most im-
portant task for Jews. And thus
the modern science of Jewish
pedagogy will be the answer of
the Jews to the false solutions of
yesterday.
Education has always been the
chief preoccupation of the Jews.
In these days of tabloids, picture
magazines, movie shorts, radio
newcasts, it is difficult to main-
tain the need for intensive Jew-
ish study. The tendency to ab-
breviate, to popularize, to limit
learning to Sunday School classes
must be overcome. The vast ex-
panse of Jewish learning cannot
be touched by these methods.
If Jewish Education Month will
serve to acquaint Jew's with the
true meaning of Jewish education,
the observance will have served
a high purpose, indeed. The Uni-
ted Hebrew Schools of Detroit
is the answer of our community
to the imperative call to renew
the faith of our Fathers, so that
our children may walk upright,
proud of their heritage, and con-
fident that their cause is a just
and noble cause.

IN KNOWLEDGE THERE IS POWER
In the knowledge that the traditions of America permit
all groups in our population to work together for the
perpetuation of a great heritage of tolerance and
democratic living, we have reason to rejoice
in the genius of this great land.
Jewish learning, the gifts of Israel to the peoples of the
world through the Bible and its kindred contribu-
tions to mankind, is an ideal to be encour-
aged by all groups in our population.
In this spirit we greet the United Hebrew Schools on the
occasion of the 15th annual Education Month, and
join with its friends in congratulating its
leaders through the columns of this
special Education Issue of The
Detroit Jewish Chronicle.
