The Empire State Express,
tamous New York Central train
which traverses New York State
each way daily on the fastest day-
light railroad run in the State,
celebrates its golden anniversary.
Its first run between New York
and Buffalo was on Oct. 26,
1891.
As the Empire begins its sec-
ond half-century of service,' F. E.
Williamson, president, New York
Central System, announced that
its present equipment will be re-
placed, in a few weeks, by two
super-streamliners of stainless
steel, now under construction in
the shops of the Edward G. Budd
Manufacturing Company, Phila-
delphia. Designers and builders
say they believe these will be the
world's finest day trains. They
will cost almost $2,500,000 and
will be operated each way be-
tween New York, Buffalo, Cleve-
land and Detroit
Each will consist of 16 cars-
deluxe coaches, parlor cars, bag-
gage car, tavern-lounge car, two
(liners and an observation-lounge
car. The trains will be hauled
by giant Hudson type passenger
locomotives of 4800 horsepower,
streamlined in stainless steel to
match the cars in a new design
by Henry Dreyfuss, in coopera-
tion with New York Central's
Equipment Engineering Depart-
ment.
