Wanted: An Explanation

The Detroit Free Press of Nov. 4 car-
ried the following item in Robert Quillen's
"Right to the Point" column: "To esti-
mate a State's wealth, count its Jews. In
New York they are 17 per cent of the
population; in three poor Southern States,
less than one-third of one per cent."
It is a shocking paragraph, and it calls
for an explanation and an apology.
What exactly does Mr. Quillen mean,
and what exactly is there "right to the
point" in this statement?
Has he surveyed the poor and rich of
New York on the basis of their wealth?
Has he made a study of the overwhelm-
ing domination of Wall Street by non-
Jews (Aryans?) and of the appalling
poverty among the Jews on the East
Side of New York?
Does he know exactly how many rich
Jews there are among the 2,200,000 Jews
of the State of New York and what their
percentage is to the total population of
13,479,000 in that entire State?
Has he measured Jewish possessions
in some small businesses in New York
State in comparison with the vast wealth
of non-Jews who control the banks, the
factories, the exporting businesses, the
newspapers, etc., etc.?
Mr. Quillen and the Detroit Free Press
owe an explanation to the Jews and an
apology to all their readers. It is stuff
of this type that encourages an 'ignorant
attitude that Jews "control" everything.
Those who protest against the outbursts
of Lindbergh should be even more out-
spoken against brief paragraphs like Mr.
Quillen's, which poison the minds of tens
of thousands of readers.

Rabbi Franklin's Rich Career

When Temple Beth El installs its new
Rabbi — Dr. B. Benedict Glazer — next
Friday evening, the important event of
welcoming an able man to the pulpit of
one of the leading congregations in Amer-
ica will also be marked by the retirement
of Dr. Leo M. Franklin whose career is
one of the richest in the American Rabbi-
nate.
Few men are privileged to give as long
and as fruitful a service as Rabbi Franklin
has given to Beth El. For more than 42
years he has guided the congregation to
its present size and to its present signifi-
cance as a leader in Reform Judaism.
Dr. Franklin's share in building De-
troit's community structure—Jewish and
civic—is too well known to need elabora-
tion. He has created good will and fellow-
ship, has helped unify relief projects, has
advanced cultural and spiritual values in
Detroit.
Detroit's welcome to Dr. Glazer will
be coupled with an expression of gratitude
and good wishes to Dr. Franklin—grati-
tude for his lifetime of service to Detroit
and good wishes for continued health and
happiness for many years to come.
Dr. Glazer will be received by all De-
troiters with the wish that he find joy
in his new home, success in his work and
the approach of better days for all man-
kind during the early days of his minis-
try here.

The Ussishkin Meeting

Detroit will pay deserved tribute to one
'of the greatest personalities of our time
when the community honors the memory
of Menahem Ussishkin, at the public
meeting at the Shaarey Zedek next Thurs-
day evening.
He was a giant in Israel. Long before
Theodor Herzl, whom he survived by 37
years, he had dedicated his life to the
cause of the redemption of his people.
He lived a very rich lilfe. During the
20 years of his leadership as world presi-
dent of the Jewish National Fund, the
Jewish people's land possessions in Eretz
Israel grew from 70,000 dunams to 560,-
000 dunams. Were it not for him, Pales-
tine would have remained a desert and
the land would have had no immigration
possibilities for Jews.
Menahem Ussishkin contributed more
than that: he was the staunch exponent
of the Hebrew language. He was the co-
creator of the idea of the Hebrew Univer-
sity with Prof. Hermann Schapira, the
founder of the Jewish National Fund.
What is equally as important is that he
was responsible for the acquisition of the
land on Mount Scopus on which the He-
brew University was built.
He was, indeed, "the iron man in Zion-
ism" who refused to compromise with his
ideals and his principles and was there-
fore able to acquire great results.
Menahem Ussishkin's name will live as
a symbol in Israel, and as such it should
be perpetuated.
A great Zionist will be the guest
speaker at the memorial meeting -- the
former president of the Zionist Organiza-
tion of America, Louis Lipsky. And an
equally brilliant exponent of the Zionist
ideal, Rabbi A. M. Hershman, will share
the platform with him in paying tribute
to the memory of Menahem Ussishkin.
Next Thursday evening should be trans-
formed into an historic occasion by De-
troit Jews, and all space available in the
Shaarey Zedek building should be filled
to overflowing with our people flocking
to hear Mr. Lipsky and Dr. Hershman
and to pay honor to the name of the
great leader Menahem Ussishkin.

Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt

Detroit is privileged to be host to the
convention of the Women's League of the
United Synagogue of America.
And our community is doubly honored
by the fact that the great wife of our
great President will be the speaker at the
public meeting at the Masonic Temple on
Tuesday evening.
This should be a memorable occasion
for the entire community. It should bring
forth thousands of Christians and Jews
for whom Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt has an
important message.

The Late Nathan Gould

The death of Nathan Gould, editor of
The Detroit Jewish Chronicle prior to
1921, saddened innumerable friends in
many cities, and many Detroiters are to
be counted among his mourners.
He was a brilliant newspaperman and
an editorial writer. He was among) those
who refused to be stampeded into a state
of panic by the rising tide of bigotry, and
counseled his associates to be calm and
collected and to deal with the issues ra-
tionally. He possessed a rare gift of hu-
mor.
In communal circles where he had been
active, and in the journalistic fraternity,
his absence will be deeply felt.

GOD PRESERVE HITLER!

How BENNY BECAME A CONIIc

In his remarkable. account of
the foibles of the Nazis, Ernest
R. Pope, for six years American
correspondent in Munich, tells this
one about a raid by the Gestapo
on a Jewish home. The raiders
picked up a suspicious-looking
notebook. Turning to the first
page, they read:
"God preserve Adolf Hitler!"
Astonished, one of the Gestapo
said: "What a strange Jew! So
patriotic, despite all persecution."
He turned the page. On it was
written in large letters:
"God preserve Joseph Goeb-
bels!"
"This Jew must be Okay," ex-
claimed the Gestapo.
They looked at page 3, which
said:
"God preserve Heinrich Ilimm-
ler!"
"Too bad this loyal German is
a Jew," the amazed Blackguards
remarked.
Page • bore the inscription:
"God preserve Hermann Goer-
ing!"
"We must make this fellow an
Honorary Aryan," the Gestapo
burst out in unison. Then they
turned to page 5. On it was
written:
"God preserve Ernst Roehm."
Below this was the penciled
note:
"Preserved—June 30, 1934."

It's appropriate that Jack Benny,
best-natured of the radio fun.
sters, should be plugging the
Navy these days—for that's where
he started on the path to fame
and fortune. In 1918, when Benny
was at the Great Lakes Naval
Training Station, he was called
on by the director of entertain-
ment to appear in the review and
to play his violin, with which he
had earned his living in vaude-
ville before enlistment. But when
Jack got through playing his se-
lection, stony silence greeted him.
Ile tried another number, worked
hard. But this wasn't the night
when the sailors were liking the
strings. In desperation, Benny
thrust the fiddle under his arm
and began talking. And they be-
gan to roar—and that's how Jack
Benny got started toward getting
$10,000 a week for his act as a
comedian. (Well, if it's $5,000,
isn't that money?)

MCCORMICK VS. STERN

Battling Dave Stern of Phila-
delphia, who gave it adrenalin to
the Record until it began to beat
like a big-time city paper, is
contesting a $50,000 libel suit
filed by John O'Donnell, Washing-
ton correspondent for the New
York Daily News, headed by iso-
lationist Capt. Patterson and Col.
Robert McCormick of Chicago
Tribune fame. The Record inti-
mated that O'Donnell was anti-
Semitic, anti-British and pro-
Hitle•. Robert Allen and Ken-
neth Crawford will go to bat
for Stern to back up the charge,
which O'Donnell just as hotly
denies . . . But the climax of
the story is that Dick Tracy and
Andy Gump and Moon Mullins
will not sully the Record's Sun-
day comic pages any more. The
McCormick outfit refused to re-
new the contact for the News-
Tribune kiddie drawings. Maybe
that's the key to the McCormick
lack of a sense of humor—and
proportion.

MORE ARABS

John Gunther is a fine gentle-
man and an excellent writer. But

lately he has become too much
of the professional "insider." In
the book "Inside Latin America,"
which has just rolled off the press,
Gunther devotes 380 words to the
Dominican refugee settlement pro-
ject. Turn to page 447 for this
closing line on the Sosua col-
ony: "Something at least re-
motely akin to the Zionist ex-
periment has moved into the West-
ern Hemisphere. Luckily Domini-
cans are not Arabs—at least not
yet."

PIORELLO 'WAS MODEST

That slam-bang election cam-
paign in New York will be all
over when this column appears.
But this story of what happened
at City Hall five days before
election day will prove that al-
though "Butch" La Guardia was
sure of re-election he was never
immodest about it. The photogra-
phers were lined up for a flash
blitz to shoot photos of Sophie
Tucker, grand old lady of the
red hot 'mammas, selling tickets
for "Night of Stars" to His Honor
the Mayor. Morello beamed and
chuckled, then offered to do a
special skit with Sophie for the
big Madison Square Garden show.
"Will you come to rehearsals?"
asked La Tucker. "Sure, why not
After Election Day I may have
lots of free time," the Little
Flower said.

ORCHIDS TO MOLLY BERG

HEARD IN PASSING

They're still arguing whether
"The Goldbergs" is good will or
bad will, but on Nov. 20, Molly
Berg will mark the 12th anni-
versary since Molly, Jake, Sammy
and Rosie have been telling their
family troubles to the nation by
air. And to coincide with the
anniversary, Columbia finds 17
new customers for the show.
When Mrs. Berg peddled her show
a dozen years ago, they said it
was silly to sell America heart-
warming Yiddish troubles. Who's
silly now?

Wonder how Bernard Samuel
feels when, as Mayor of Phila-
delphia, he is accosted as a Jew
although he has never associated
with the Jewish community,
though he is a half-Jew and his
proboscis might confuse the un-
initiated.
Hollywood's Garson Kanin says
he's just taken another heavy cut
in salary. The $50,000-a-year-film
director got $21 a month as a
selective service trainee. He's just
become a $1-a-year man to help
Uncle Sam make defense films.

Hitler and the Isolationists

by BRESSLER

100 FRENCHMEN

MUST DIA,w;

The Chicago Daily News has compiled
the following striking quotations from
Hitler's "Mein Kampf":
"The frontiers of 1914 signify
nothing at all for the future of the
German nation . . . Might alone
makes right" ("Mein Kampf," p.
94). "North America . . . consists for
the greatest part of Germanic ele-
ments (p. 392). The German Reich,
as a State, should include all Ger-
mans (p. 601)."
Having heard what Adolf Hitler has
to say, what will the appeasing isolation-
ists have to say in response to such frank
warnings to America and Americans? Or,
is Adolf mote frank than the isolationists?
