DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and the Legal Chronicle

Jean B. Chamberlain
Qualified for Council

Mrs. Jean B. Chamberlain,
candidate for the Common Coun-
cil, has caught the public's fancy
in its consideration of women can-
didates for the Council evidently
because of her striking record of
experience in public affairs. For
over 20 years she has been a force
in Detroit, civic, political and so-
cial activities, has held command-
ing appointive offices and has
taken a leading part in fostering
progressive programs for the
city's betterment.
Her record as Recorder's Court
Jury Commissioner under four
governors; House of Correction
Commissioner under five mayors;
member of the State Unemploy-

ment Commission; official of the
Michigan Housing Association
and as a member of many civic
committees has intrigued many
men and women, unaware that
even in this day of feminine ac-
tivity in politics a woman has
had so much public experience.
Their reaction is that Mrs. Cham-
perlain is much more qualified to
serve on the Council than many
of her male opponents, few of
whom can boast comparable pub-
lic records.
The committee sponsoring Mrs.
Chamberlain's candidacy has
adopted as its slogan that elect-
ing her means "restoring. confi-
dence in our city government".
The signs are that the public is
convinced it's a sound idea and
is preparing to name her as De-
troit's first Council woman.

Winant Hails Brandeis as "Great.
est Lawyer and Great Jew"

LONDON (JPS) — In solemn
tones of reverence, John Winant,
American ambassador to Eng-
land, joined with other distin-
guished Jewish and Christian
leaders to pay tribute to the
late Louis D. Brandeis at a me-
morial meeting at the Zionist
Organization headquarters and
referred to him as "the great-
est lawyer, a great Puritan and
a great Jew."
Into the office crowded repre-
sentatives of the British Foreign
and Colonial Offices, members of
the American Legation and lead-
ers of British Jewry, as Dr.
Chains Weizmann, president of
the Jewish Agency for Palestine
with whom Mr. Brandeis broke
in 1920, presided over the impres-
sive ceremonies. In addition to
Mr. Winant and Dr. Weizmann,

other speakers included Lord
Snell, who as Harry Snell had
dissented from the Shaw Report;
David ben Gurion, chairman of
the Jewish Agency Executive, and
Professor Selig Brodetsky, presi-
dent of the Jewish Board of
Deputies.
"Few men had a greater rev-
erence for the past," said Mr.
Winant of the late American-
Zionist leader, "or used their
accumulated knowledge with
greater wisdom than Brandeis.

He related economics to the law
as did few other American jur-
ists. He understood the common
wants of men. We was the great-
est lawyer but he remained a
layman's jurist, combining law
with reality. He had greatness,
taking pains in simplicity. He
was a great Puritan in religion,
a great Jew, a kindly friend, lift-
ing life for all. All held him in
the highest respect and affec-
tionate regard."
