OCTOBER 17, 1941 TISHRI 26, 5702 Brandeis and Ussishkin Wills The will of the late Justice Louis D. Brandeis provides eloquent proof of the great jurist's and eminent Zionist's ideal- ism. It is estimated that at least $1,000,- 000 of his fortune will go to several causes in which he was vitally interested, and the liberality of his last testament puts to shame the many multi-millionaires who passed away in the last few years without remembering a single worthwhile cause or charity. Justice Brandeis' preferences, as shown in his will, reveal also the devotion he had to certain great movements. He was concerned about civil liberties, he de- sired to see the work in Palestine go on with success and he was interested in the University of Louisiana Library in which his uncle, Lewis N. Dembitz, took a deep interest. Thus, besides the Univer- sity of Louisiana Library, Hadassah, Pal- estine Endowment and Survey Asso- ciates will benefit from his will. To the latter will go one-fourth of the specially- created trust fund "for the maintenance of civil liberty and the promotion of workers' education in the United States." A lifetime's idealism is wisely perpetu- ated in a practical will written by a great man. Equally interesting is the will of the great Zionist leader, Menahem Ussishkin. Part of the property left by Mr. Ussishkin was bequeathed to the Jewish National Fund, whose world president he had been for 20 years, and other income of his property will be dedicated to a number of educational stipends. Thus Ussishkin, too, provided in his lifetime for the con- tinuation after his death of the causes in which he was vitally interested. Do Jews Need Defense? Former Governor Chase S. Osborn says some interesting things about the Jewish position, in a statement appearing in this issue of The Detroit Jewish Chronicle. Mr. Osborn, whose sincerity is unques- tioned, who has no bias in his heart and who is a friend of our people if ever there was one, thinks we are too sensitive. He believes that we have made, and are making, a good mark in the world so well that we need no defense at all. Theoretically speaking, Mr. Osborn is right. No, we should not need defense. The attacks upon us are so dastardly and un-American that they ought not merit the attention they receive. But Mr. Osborn overlooks one thing: the pack of lies disseminated by those who aim to harm us needs an airing, and all honest citizens are obligated to do that. That is why we zejoice when we see a genuine outburst of indignation against Lindbergh and his cohorts by the Christians of America. Also, Mr. Osborn overlooks the exist- ence of a menace. The Jews are the first target, and Christians come next. Amer- ica and American principles are in danger when ideas like Lindbergh's gain adher- ents. The editorial in the current issue of the Liberty Magazine entitled "Lindbergh —The Most Dangerous Man in America" proves our point. As the editorial points out, Liberty had defended Lindbergh's right to free speech. But the current is- sue's editorial states: "The time has come when we must revise our attitude. If Lind- bergh is sincere, then his is the sincerity of the witch burner." And after pointing to the danger tgat emanates from his spread of bigoted ideas which lead to racial and religious prejudice and to anti- Semitism, the Liberty editorial states: "It no longer matters whether Lindbergh is sincere or not. He is America's number one Nazi." Against pro-Nazis, it becomes neces- 3ary to conduct a fight, whether one looks at the menace from a Jewish or a Chris- tian viewpoint. On this score, it is not a question of being sensitive, but rather a need for being vigilant against the out- burst of bigotry. It is America and Ameri- canism that are at stake, and they must )e defended. The Role of Hadassah When Hadassah, the women's Zionist organization, holds its 27th annual con- vention in Pittsburgh, Oct. 29 to Nov. 2, new problems will face the largest single, Zionist group in this country. The issues will revolve around the need for protect- ing the Jewish position in Palestine, the necessity for strengthening the political guarantees without which the Yishuv will be weakened, the need for preparation for the post-war period during which supreme efforts will have to be made to settle Jews in ever-increasing numbers in the Homeland and to assure the secur- ity of the Jewish settlement. Thus, Hadassah, always primarily a movement that sponsored the health-pro- tective needs of Palestine, may find itself more thickly involved in the political im- plications of the Zionist movement. Wise- ly approached, such a new role should be a constructive trend for Zionism. In the meantime, Hadaqsah continues to render, important service. The success of Detroit Hadassah's Honor Roll, now nearing completion for the current year, is an indication of an interest that keeps women loyally participating in efforts for Jewish national reconstruction. An Important Document .'.Heard in the Lobbies• . By DAVID DEUTSCH BRANDEIS WAS LINCOLNESQUE THE BRITISH LIKE LOZOVSKY Photographs or' the late Jus- tice Brandeis never 'caught the likeness, but the first thing that struck the naked eye as it be- held the tall impressive figure was the strong resemblance to Abe Lincoln. This was especially no- ticeable in the summer when the famed jurist would live in quiet solitude at Chatham, Mass . . . Three years ago, when the Pal- estine partition question was boil- ing over, Stephen S. Wise raced down from Provincetown to Chat- ham to discuss a very important story which had appeared in the New York Times. When Dr. Wise sat down to talk things over with Brandeis, he realized that he had forgotten to bring a clip- ping of the Palestine dispatch. A hurried search revealed that the roan who had driven down with Dr. Wise had wrapped . up his sneakers in the page of the newspaper on which the article had been published. The tennis shoes were promptly unwrapped and the two Jewish leaders re- sumed their conference over tba wrinkled clipping . . . Although the newspapers tried to link Jus- tice Brandeis' visit to the White House in 1938 with the refugee problem or his possible resigna- tion from the Supreme Court, the truth was that he went to see the President purely for the pur- pose of attempting to avoid the stoppage of Jewish immigration into Palestine which was then threatened as a prelude to the White Paper of May, 1941. A RABBI MAY PREACH Rabbi Michael Aaronsohn of Cincinnati, famous blind hero of the Argonne, writes this colum- nist to inquire what we meant in our New Year resolution "to give the Jewish war veteran his due, but not to yield to his preach- ings on Jewish life simply because he once wore a uniform." Well, the answer is very simple. If as in the case of Rabbi Aaronsohn, the veteran happens also to be a rabbi, then by all means we should respect his preachings. But in all cases a man's ideas and sincerity rather than his uni- form should determine his import- ance. The courage and the au- thority of a Michael Aaronsohn are not the common heritage of every veteran. HE ALMOST GOT TO ICELAND Sammy Schulman, top - notch photographer for International News Photos, was assigned to go to Iceland to cover American military activities there for all of the leading picture syndicates in the U. S. But Schulman never got to Iceland because Associated Press photographers who were flown there from Londan arrived ahead of him. Sammy was re- called after he had spent many weeks on the rough Atlantic, heroically fighting off a savage case of seasickness. The British like Simon Abramo_ vich Lozovsky — call him the world's best broadcaster. Lozovsky is a former college professor who once worked as a blacksmith. He is a handsome fellow and very athletic too, despite his 60 years. Lozovsky is six feet tall and acts like it when he is taking on Dr. — Goebbels (Lozovsky calls him "Apollo") and his propaganda henchmen. Lozovsky is the man who has put so much salt and pepper in the Russian communi- ques that the Nazis have had to do some tall stepping to escape his biting ridicule. His greatest achievement is the system of radio interpolations which he hal worked out to poke fun at the German broadcasts of victory. Ile has also dropped communiques be- hind the German lines which can be used as safe passage for any Nazi soldiers who, wish to desert to the Russians. In describing a British engagement with Italians who had 2,000 mules, Lozovsky said: "The mules resisted to the end." THE BUNDISTS ARE BUSY Confidentially, the Bundistx (bitter-ender Jewish Socialist op- ponerits of Zionism) are doing their worst to prevent any active participation on the part of Amer- ican Jewish labor in far-reaching discussions now taking place for a revitalization of the Jewish Agency for Palestine . . . The Jewish Labor Committee failed to show up at a recent meeting and the boys in the know have reason to believe that this ab- sence was not purely accidental . . . By the way, the General Jewish Council is supposed to be wooing the American Jewish Con- gress to return to the fold. The woo-pitching is believed to be only an act. We have just received a tele- gram signed jointly by Dr. Solo- mon Lowenstein and Joseph Wil- len in which they deny that there is any disagreement between then: regarding the establishment of a permanent United Jewish Appeal for New York. It may interest the two gentlemen to know that the information which they tern: "false" came from sources close to both of them. YOM KIPPUR AND MR. ICKES When Secretary Ickes went be- fore the Maloney Committee in- vestigating the oil shortage on Yom Kippur, his press depart- ment was late with its news re- leases on the Secretary's report to the Senate body. A member of the Interior Department finally showed up with the press stories, but by that time an entire edi- tion of the afternoon papers had gone to press without the Ickes statement. The reason for the delay was the fact that most of the members of the mimeograph- ing department were in Washing- ton synagogues, observing the Day of Atonement. Of the numerous compilations published in an effort to expose subversive activi- ties in this country, the brochure "Fifth Column Facts" published by the Veter- ans of Foreign Wars of the U. S., with national headquarters at Kansas City, Mo., is most significant. Presented as a handbook of information on Nazi, Fascist and Communist activities in this country, this pamphlet does more : it makes scatching denunciation of these move= ments and warns the country against them. !TIME TO CLEAN OUT THE CELLAR In the foreword, the Veterans of For- eign Wars point out frankly that while the nation's most urgent need is an ade- quate - national defense, "What most con- cerns every one of us today, apart from arms and armaments, is protection against the mental and spiritual inroads of Fifth Column propaganda." The editors of the pamphlet declare : "We must be on the alert, like sentries peering into the dark night, prepared for the next move of the enemy." Who is the enemy? "Fifth Column Facts" does not mince words or hide facts. It exposes the Communist, Nazi and Fascist groups, it mentions the cul- prits by name, it links Charles E. Cough- lin with Germany's Goering, it includes facts about Fritz Kuhn (now in jail), "Handsome" Joe McWilliams, Gerald Winrod, William Dudley Pelley and their k. Here is a pamphlet which should be circulated among all American citizens as ammunition against the further spread of bigotry which is a weapon in the hands of totalitarians to destroy the unity of this land. The pamphlet can be secured from the Department of Americanism of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Washing- ton, D. C. The more Americans who read it, the less the danger from the Nazi- Fascist-Communist front. by BRESSLER
