The Texas House of Repre-
sentatives adopted a resolution
advising Lindbergh to stay out
of Texas. No purpose would be
served by such a visit, the Texas
House voted.
The New Republic, devoting
considerable space to the "anti-
Semitic plot" among isolationists,
saw the anti-Jewish mouthings
as "an attempt to blackmail those
Americans who are also Jews into
silence by threatening them with
dire consequences if they con-
tinue to exercise their rights as
Americans to speak and vote
on either side of the issue of
Hitlerism."

Strike Back at Lindbergh

CLYDE'S CAFE

The Jews of the United States
will not be terrorized into silence
by the mouthings of Charles A.
Lindbergh, it is clear from state-
ments issued by the American
Jewish Committee, the American
Jewish Congress Congress, the
Jewish Labor Committee and the
Anti-Defamation League of Bnai
Brith. Determined to protect
their rights as American citizens,
they refuse to be huddled into
a corner by anti-Semites who ac-
cuse them of agitating for war.
The statements agree in their
basic premise that Jews are
Americans who have the best
interests of this country at heart
and who have never advocated a
course inimical to the welfare of
the nation. They are uniformly
defiant of either the threats or
the cajolings of the self-consti-
tuted "friends" of the Jewish
people.
"We are obliged to Mr. Lind-
bergh for his gratuitous advice,"
said a joint statement of the
American Jewish Committee and
the Jewish Labor Committee,
"and reject completely his un-
American appeal to selfish in-
terests. We will not put even
what he considers our 'inter-
ests' before those of our coun-
try, since our interests and those
of our country are one and in-
divisible."

Congress by its president, Dr.
Stephen S. Wise, makes clear the
position of the Jews with respect
to Hitler, protection of Ameri-
can democracy, and support of
the policy of the President and
the Congress of the United
States. The Lindbergh Des
Moines speech is termed "Hit-
ler-like if not Hitler-instigated."
Addressing itself "to our fel-
low Americans of all faiths," the
message points out "that Jews
have no view or attitude in rela-
tion to foreign affairs that is
not dictated solely by American
interests."
"As Americans, Jews have nat-
urally differed in attitude or
viewpoint in relation to the war,"
says the message. "Far from agi-
tating for war, however, Jewish
groups have since the beginning
of Hitler's attack not only on
them but on all religion and on
humanity itself. exerted the ut-
most restraint." They had hoped
together with all peace-loving
citizens that Hitler's attack upon
human freedom might be ended
"without the involvement of this
country in war." However, Amer-
ican Jews believe, in common
with the majority of all Ameri-
cans, "that American freedom is
threatened. that the democratic
way of life is menaced. Not be-
cause Jews were the earliest vic-
tims, but bcause we fear that our
country may become the last
victim. we have instinctively
ranged ourselves for the most
part, though far from uniformly,
with vast numbers of our fellow-
