Yom Kippur
Next Tuesday evening, and all day
Wednesday, Jews throughout the world
will atone for their sins—in synagogues
in free countries, in trenches in war-torn
lands, in concentration camps in Nazi-
controlled territories.
Some of us have much to atone for.
Many have lacked the strength of char-
acter to refuse to make concessions in
matters demanding strict adherence to
Jewish law. Some have failed to be kind
to their fellow-men. Quite a few should
say "we have sinned" because they had
lacked the courage to fight for their
rights and because they yielded to man's
worst enemy—FEAR.
As we atone, many of us will surely
ask the question : how soon with the sin-
ful among the nations of the world, who
are responsible for the evils to which
mankind is subjected today, begin to do
some atoning for THEIR crimes?
May all humanity rise to greater
heights in recognizing the value of Atone-
ment, and may Israel and the nations of
the world be granted peace and justice!
Shetzer's Elevation
Simon Shetzer's elevation to the posi-
tion of national executive director of the
Zionist Organization of America should
please Detroit Jews as a mark of recog-
nition of one of the young men who rose
to leadership in our community and later
acquired national prominence.
He entered the arena of Jewish life in
1929, and shortly thereafter was chosen
president of the Zionist Organization of
Detroit. From that time on he became a
figure of importance. He was recognized
in the Federations; he was chosen chair-
man of the board of the Detroit Service
Group; he was elected president of the
Detroit Community Council; he was
active in the Board of Commerce.
Now he goes to a national post in
Washington. It is the most important re-
sponsibility that ever faced him. In his
new job he will have the opportunity of
striving to build up Zionist morale, of
strengthening the organization, of in-
creasing cultural efforts in the movement,
of bringing the youth closer to the Jew-
ish national cause.
We wish him well in his new task and
we hope he will succeed in all these
things.
Mr. Hoover's Assurances
In his address in Chicago on Sept. 16,
former President Herbert Hoover said, in
relation to American policy on Hitlerism:
"If we prepare we cannot be invaded
nor our economic life be dangerously im-
paired."
That's right, Mr. Hoover.
But "preparation" calls also for defense
against unexpectemd• enemies within our
ranks.
In a sense, a bid of Hitlerism has al-
ready invaded our shores.
Look at Lindbergh.
The New Yeshivah
An event of great importance in shap-
ing the future of the Jewish people will
take place Sunday afternoon when the
cornerstone will be placed for the new
building of Yeshivath Beth Yehudah.
In effect it will mean the strengthening
of the foundation of the House of Israel.
Without learning steeped in faith, our
people's status in the world is weakened.
But a culturally powerful and religiously
inspired people is provided with the
strength that is necessary for survival and
for honorable existence.
The destruction of the Yeshivoth in
European countries has meant the drying
up of the reservoirs of Jewish culture.
These great institutions must now be re-
established in free lands, with the United
States occupying the first _position in this
category.
May the Detroit Yeshivah be worthy
of the traditions of the past and of the
responsibilities placed upon it by history,
and may it prove a pillar of strength in
the building of a generation of self-re-
specting Jews.
Isolationists and Anti-Semitism
It is easier to deal with a person like
Charles A. Lindbergh now that his posi-
tion is known.
By the same token, it is not so difficult
to be on guard against Gerald L. K.
Smith and his so-called "Committee of
1,000,000," now that the former Minis-
ter of the Gospel has endorsed the sen-
timents of the former flier.
Similarly, Senators Nye, Wheeler and
Holt have shown their true colors by their
recent attitudes and public statements.
The disgraceful action of Mr. Lind-
bergh and the failure of his sponsors, the
America First Committee, to repudiate
his bigoted speech, justifies the charge
made in Washington, D. C., by the Com-
mittee to Defend America that the isola-
tionists are copying the Hitler pattern of
anti-Semitism by methods aimed at des-
troying national unity behind our Gov-
ernment's foreign policy.
Also, the Detroit News, in its recent
editorial, was correct in stating that the
Lindbergh method is calculated to resort
to the Fascist plan of "divide and rule."
The statement of the Committee to De-
fend America makes some serious charges.
It reads:
"The American people are waiting, prob-
ably in vain, to see if any member of the
America First group or any of the i sola-
tionist Senators will condemn Charles A.
Lindbergh for his anti-Semitic speech at Des
Moines, or Senator Gerald P. Nye for his
anti-Semitic statements before the so-called
subcommittee to hold hearings on the motion
picture industry and war.
"It is not enough to condemn Lindbergh
and Nye," the Committee stated. "Why was
it that when Nye was testifying before he
Senate Committee, not a single isolationist
Senator condemned his testimony? Why did
Brooks and Tobe y and Clark remain silent
during Nye's infamous remarks?
"Unless and until the isolationist bloc of
the Senate, the isolationist America First
Committee, and the isolationist leaders of
the country generally openly repudiate Sena-
tor Nye and Charles Lindbergh, the Ameri-
can people will proceed on the assumption
that the isolationist movement in the United
States copies the Hitler pattern of anti-
Sernitism as a means of destroying national
unity.
"Many American s who up to now pro-
fessed to believe that Mr. Lindbergh was
simply misguided were shocked at his speech
in Des Moines because it followed the Nazi
racial pattern.
lit sounded very much like the speeches
that Hitler's dupes or lieutenants made in
France and in other countries, where the
attempt was made to divide before attack.
It looks as if the leading isolationists of this
country were following the same tactics and
fitting in the same ideological pattern as did
the Nazi sympathizers in countries that Hit-
ler has alread y destroyed.
"The America n people will not stand for
it; the y will not have the democracy and
tolerance of this country destroyed by those
who would weaken its national will by Nazi
tactics."
In the interest of truth let it be re-
corded that a few of the men and women
affiliated with the America First Corn-
mittee have condemned the Lindbergh ad-
dress, and some have even withdrawn
from the committee. But these are only
a few. The committee itself has done
nothing to reject the Lindbergh method
of injecting race and religious hatred
among Americans. Therefore, until Lind-
berg, anti-Semitism, pro-Nazism and the
worst elements of un-Americanism are
repudiated, the America First Committee
stands condemned as condoning bigotry.

THE JUDGES WERE HONORED
ONE FOR MR. WHEELER
Don't let anyone tell you that
ex-President Kaufmann of the
Z. 0. A. picked Judge Louis
Levinthal as his successor, even
though the former's statement of
withdrawal named the jurist as
the logical candidate. When the
supporters of Mr. K. offered the
presidency to Judge L., the judge
pleaded that his judicial duties
would not permit him to devote
the required time to the office.
But his non-Jewish colleagues on
the Common Pleas bench got
wind of the offer. They were
deeply impressed and pleased.
They called Judge Levinthal and
insisted that he take the leader-
ship of the Zionist Organization.
"You needn't worry about your
judicial duties," the two Gentile
judges said. "We shall feel highly
honored to have you assume the
presidency of the Zionist Organ-
ization and we shall arrange mat-
ters so that you will have ample
time to meet your responsibilities
to the American-Jewish commu-
nity." That is how Judge Levin-
thal came to be the new Z. 0. A.
President . . Philadelphia is
happy about it, and Brooklyn is
very much enthused, too—because
Judge Levinthal's brother, Rabbi
Israel H. is one of its most be-
loved leaders.
While the isolationists were
lambasting the movies for tim2i•.
"war-mongering" in the subcom-
mittee sessions at Washington,
isolationist Minnesota was giving
a rousing reception to the so-
called "wan' films". Business has
never been better in that state's
movie houses. They say that
Wendell Wilkie will get $100,000
for defending the Hollywood pro-
ducers. He'll be worth every bit
of it. By the way, Will Hays
had been slated for the Wilkie
job, but he decided to be a wit-
ness instead.
FEUD BREWING
There's a feud brewing between
Joe Willen (NY Federation) and
Dr. Solomon Lowenstein, dean of
Federation leaders. The canvas
Belli, as they say in Washington,
is the permanent New York
United Jewish Appeal, which is
now aborning amidst a plethora
of conferences and cofisultations
. . . Mr. Willen would like to
run the whole show, but Dr.
Lowenstein has asked him to keep
hands off. The fur will be flying
thick and heavy very soon,
GOOD WILL
Good Will is big business these
days. In 1927 the National Con-
ference for Christians and Jews
spent $11,000 and had a staff of
two persons. Today the confer-
ence is spending $250,000 an-
nually and has a staff of 70.
CONFIDENTIAL IN A BIG WAY
Telegrams have been received
by key leaden's in various com-
munities summoning them to a
"small confidential conference".
The wires are signed by David
Dubinsky, of the A. F. L., Jus-
tice Samuel I. Rosenbman
(Sammy the Rose to F. D. R.),
William Rosenwald and William
Shroder of the Council of Jewish
Federations . . . It is no coinci-
dence that the date of this con-
ference, Oct. 19, almost dovetails
with a meeting of the Allotment
Committee of the United Jewish
Appeal. Obviously the purpose of
this mysterious pow-wow is to
boom the cause of the National
Refugee Service so that it may
get a bigger slice of the funds
American Jews will raise in '41.
RULING THE SHORTWAVES
It looks as if the shortwave
radio broadcasting business will
come under rigid government con-
trol. The talk in the airways is
that Colonel William ("Wild
Bill") Donovan will take that
part of radio business over to
help organize a systematic anti-
foreign, anti-Axis propaganda
drive.
FROM RABBI TO LAWYER
Charlie Lynch is a familiar
figure in the city of Cincinnati.
They say that no real estate deal,
big or small, is ever negotiated
without his knowledge or active
participation. Many years ago
Lynch, a poor Jewish young man,
came to the attention of the late
President Taft's brother, the
city's biggest real estate magnate.
Lynch climbed the ladder in me-
teoric . strides until he . reached
the very top. Then one day his
(laughter fell in love with a
young rabbi. The suitor was a
staunch liberal, the prospective
father-in-law a diehard reaction-
ary. Lynch was puzzled but not
stumped. He persuaded the young
man to give up the rabbinate for
the law and the young couple
lived happily ever after . . .
While on the subject of Cincin-
nati, you should know that Phil
Ban of Chicago came to that city
as a delegate to the recent Zion-
ist Convention in the garb of a
U. S. soldier; and when he ap-
peared at the banquet in khaki
uniform topped by a black skull
cap, some of the wiseacres were
pointing to him as the first
recruit for an "Orthodox" Jew-
ish army . . . Florid, smiling
Archibald Silverman of Provi-
dence deserves this year's award
for efficiency. When anyone ap-
proached him in the conventions
lobby to inquire about his wife,
who is a devoted Zionist, he
would say: "Just a minute". He
would fish into his vest pocket,
pull out a card and flash it at
you. And there for all to see and
read was a simple typewritten
notice telling you that Mrs. Sil-
verman was well, that she was in
South America, that she would
be back in October, and that he
and she both thank you for ask-
ing about her . . . • Incidentally,
Father Coughlin reprinted part
of one of Mrs. Silverman's series
of articles on the Jews in South
America in the July 18 issue of
"Social Justice".
