DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and the Legal Chronicle
In the Memory of
Rabbi M. M. Zager
September Brides
► EEP
By RABBI MOSES FISCHER
On the Eve of Rosh Hashonah
itf 5701 (1940) Detroit Jewry
was suddenly shocked by the
news that one of the leading and
most popular rabbis and preach-
ers—R a b b i Menachim Mendell
Halevi Zager—had unexpectedly
in the vigor of his manhood, in
the full possession of his fine
intellectual powers, passed unto
His Reward—at the premature
age of 54 years.
Rabbi Zager was one of the
most popular spiritual leaders of
Detroit Orthodox Jewry. All in
him—his whole personality, the
friendly smile ever present on
his lips, the shining friendship
radiating from his face—breathed
good will toward all "created be-
ings". The very modulation and
softness of his voice portrayed
his great interest in the person
before him as well as in the
cause presented to him. Even his
imposing and impressing exterior
marked him as a distinct per-
sonality "from his shoulders and
above—higher than the average
man."
Rabbi Zager acquired the
foundations to his thorough Tal-
mudical knowledge in the famous
rabbinical academies in Russia
and Poland. But while giving up
most of his days and nights to
the study of the Bible, Talmud
and ancient Jewish literature, by
wise budgeting of his time, he
found always some spare hours
to acquaint himself with the clas-
sics of modern Hebrew and Yid-
dish literature, in the vast store-
house of which he found many
elements which he assimilated and
reconciled with his burning, reli-
gious convictions. On the other
hand, he found other elements

sentenced him to death and were
ready to perform it for the crime
that he was too zealous for the
cause of the Lord and propa-
gandized the Law of Israel. Rabbi
Zager suffered all his life from
the impacts of those cruel mo-
ments when he prepared himself
to die for his faithfulness to the
Torah. He may, `therefore, be
counted among the "Sainted Ke-
doshim" in Israel. Many of his
manuscripts containing his pre-
cious commentaries to the Tal-
mudic and Midrashic Literature
and the outlines of his sermons
are waiting for the light of pub-
lication.
Rabbi Zager left behind a fine
loving family—a true, loyal widow
with two daughters who live and
perpetuate in their lives the reli-
gious concepts and ideals of their
father. May his memory be
blessed.

Weep for a man who di-
vides his country into two
classes—and marks off the'
lesser of these as the Jews.
Weep for a man who
weeps himself for the
troubles of those of Jewish
blood—and denies them a
voice in their salvation.
Weep for a man who
speaks of sympathy for a
persecuted people—and be-
cause they are persecuted
brands them traitors.
Weep for a man who puts
forth the hand of seeming
friendship—and squirts out
the venom of race suspic-
ion, and hatred, and be-
trayal.
Weep for a man who de-
nies he hates the Jews—
and uses hatred to foster
disunity and disorganiza-
tion that his nation may
falter in time of emergency
Weep for a man in this
free country who has taught
you to believe he was with
you—and plays the bloody
racial game of Fascism.
Weep for Senator Nye.
Don't weep for the Jews
—for though their corpses
strew the streets of Eu-
rope at the hand of a migh-
tier hater, they have died
before and survived their
killers.
Don't weer) for the Jews
for though they starve be-
cause of their blood, in
their blood is not the taint
that stains the blood of the
men who starve them.
Don't weep for your coun-
try—for now you will know
who stands for the things
it means.
Don't weep for your coun-
try—for democracy is big-
ger than small men who
forget that all men are
equal.
Don't weep for your coun-
try, but fight—for freemen
never kept their liberty
without fighting, both
against the traducer from
within and the enemy with-
out.
But weep for Senator
Nye.
