many have been brought home,
revulsion has swept over Amer.
icon citizens. Where minds pois-
oned against England are closed
to all except appeals to bigotry,
Lindbergh has rallied a few tat-
tered cohorts and retained his
hysterical "following."
Few sections of America have
been left untouched by the con-
troversy. The issue of isolation-
ism vs. intervention has taken
on a wholly new meaning as
Lindbergh's attack on the Jews
was construed as the adaptation
of the Nazi "line" to this coun-
try. In the face of general con-
tempt for these tactics, only a
small minority of even the iso-
lationists have had the courage
to come out openly in support of
Jew-baiting.

By far the most prominent
convert to Hitlerite ideology has
been Senator Gerald P. Nye of
North Dakota, whose •endorse-
ment of the flier's views was
tempered only by a nostalgic
hope—"At first I wished the
Colonel had not been quite so di-
rect." But since "the Colonel"
had chosen to be direct, Nye
could do no less than speak out
in terms appropriate to his turn
of mind.
"As long as interventionists
work to interject the anti-Semi-
tic issue, perhaps this is the
time to be speaking very frank-
ly. As Lindbergh said; without
being anti-Semitic, those of the
Jewish faith are contributing to
the cause of intervention. Their
interest is very natural. If I were
one of them, I should feel as
they do towards those who have
Persecuted my people. But I
should try not to let my natural
batred blind me to the first and
best interest of my own coun-
try."

"Condescending Sympathy:1'

Here was the same condescend-
ing "sympathy" for the Jews
which Lindbergh had shown.
Wrapped inextricably with it was
the same vicious attack upon the
patriotism of Jewish citizens, who
are not blamed for their thoughts
but are by Nye's dictum to be
