Lamport, Prominent Jewish Leader, Dies at 61 NEW ROCHELLE, N. Y. — Samuel C. Lamport, president of Lamport Company, Inc., one of the best known cotton merchants in the United States and widely known philanthropist, died here of a heart attack at his Summer home on Gale Island, Premium Point, Saturday morning. He was 131 years old. He was chairman of the toler- ance committee of the Te Export Association. Recently Mr. Lamport had been active as adviser to the Office on Price Administration on textile affairs and had urged adoption of a plan of his devis- ing for the disposal of the na- tion's huge cotton surplus. The Lamport plan called for weaving the cotton into goods to be sub- sidized in the export market as an advertisement for democracy and for building a new demand for cotton goods. Mr. Lamport leaves a widow, Mrs. Miriam Dworsky Lamport, and two daughters, the Misses Sarah Marcia and Vivien Felicia Lamport. He also is survived by a brother, Joseph H. Royal State Poultry Company Father in Rag Business Hyman Karp and Dave Sokel Samuel Charles Lamport was born fit Marienpol, Poland, April 4,- 9.880, the son of Nathan and Sarah Goldenstein Lamport. His parents brought him as an in- fant to this country, where his father was in the rag business. He was educated in the public schools at Burlington, Vt., and at the College of the City of New York. In 1905 he was grad- uated from Brown University. After graduation he entered his father's business, which in the last 50 years has grown to be one of the largest textile export- ing firms in the country. Mr. Lamport was president of the Lamport Manufacturing Sup- ply Company, Inc., former chair- man of the board of directors of Lawton Mills Corporation, former director of the Broadway Nation- al Bank and rust Company and former director of Hillcrest Gar- dens, Inc. At his death he was president of Lamport Company, Inc., and a director of the Pal- estine Economic Corporation. He was a former governor of the National Association of Cotton Manufacturers. He was also one of the most widely known figures in American Jewry, a generous contributor to Jewish philanthropic and educa- tional institutions. He was a trustee of the Jewish Publica- tion Society of America, and a director of Beth Israel Hospital, New York; the Jewish Education Association, the American Jew- ish Committee, the Home of Daughters of Jacob and Yeshiva College. During the World War, Mr. Lamport personally bought 1,- 000,000 worth of Liberty Loan bonds and sold $19,000,000 worth. He was chairman of the East Side Liberty Loan cam- paign in this city. At the same time Mr. Lam- port served as censor of foreign newspapers under George Creel of the Office of Public Informa- tion at Washington. From his youth, Mr. Lamport was greatly interested in philan- thropies. His latest charity was the gift of 20 pianos to the United States Army for use in cantonments, hostess houses, and recreation centers. He made the gift through the Jewish War Veter- ans of the United States, of which he was an honorary mem- ber. Mr. Lamport was one of the first to attack Hitler before he became Chancellor in 1933. Re- turning from a visit to Russia, where he had gone to discuss trade relations between that country and the United States, he characterized the rise of Hitlerism as "blatant bragga- docio" and warned Jews of ex- cesses if the Nazis gained pow- er.
