it is being observed nationally and
sponsored jointly by the American
Association for Jewish Education,
a group of prominent lay leaders,
and the National Council for Jew-
ish Education, a body of educa,
tors. In discussing the importance
of the Jewish Education Month,
Samuel J. Borowsky, a member
of the National Council, and Is-
rael S. Chipkin, of the American
Association, emphasized the need
for Jewish religious education at
this time when all spiritual values
are being threatened.
Mr. Crohn has issued the fol-
lowing proclathation on the occa-
sion of the 15th annual Educa-
tion Month:
The Annual Jewish Educa-
tion Month, sponsored by the
United Hebrew Schools of De-
troit, has become an honored
tradition in our midst. Begin-
ning with Rosh Hashonah, the
thoughts of Detroit Jewry will
be directed to the place and
importance of Jewish educa-
tion in the life of the Jewish
People. The call of the Sho-
far will recall the ancient
glories of our people, as it
will be a clarion call to re-
constitute Jewish life here and
now. With knowledge and
understanding only can we
face this unioue task.
Jewish Educatio, ! What a
vast sea of learning, of cul-
ture, and spiritual growth are
conjured up by these words.
The Hebrew languuige, Jew-
ish history, Bible, Talmud,
these are the ingredients of
Jewish education. But as the
houses of a city are but brick
and mortar without the peo-
ple who inhabit them, so is
the culture of a people, life-
less and without meaning un-
less put into daily practice.
So true is this, that we may
define Jewish education as the
will to life of the Jewish
group.
"Teach it to Thy Children"
proclaimed the founder of
Judaism. In each succeeding
generation, this original edict
has been adhered to. Woe be-
tide that this magic chain shall
ever be broken. The education
of our children is the cement
which binds each succeeding
generation with the past, thus
assuring Jewish continuity. So
has Israel survived through the
ages. And thus has Israel be-
come immortal, despite the
hardships and terrors of per-
secution.
To this eternal principle,
Jewish education is dedicated.
May the men and women of
our community, together with
Jews everywhere, turn their
attention during the sacred
month of Tishri to the spirit-
ual needs of our children. And
to this end, the Fifteenth An-
nual Education Month is here-
by formally procalimed, with
the hope that from its observ-
ance there will be a renewed
understanding of the signific-
ance of Jewish education in
the life of our people.
have been started.
The laying of the cornerstone will take place Sun-
day, Sept. 28, at 1 :30 p. m., at Dexter and Cortland
Ayes. A nationally known guest speaker will be on the
program. •Details will be published in the next edition
of The Chronicle.
