David A. Croll Writes Despatch
Rider's Primer and Alphabet of
Map Reading for British Forces
Hon. David A. Croll, former
Mayor of Windsor, Ontario, who
created a sensation when he en-
listed with the Canadian forces
to fight in England against Na-
zism, in spite of his being above
military age and the head of a
family, is acquiring new fame.
Having risen to the rank of Lieu-
tenant, word now conies from
London that he had written a

compiled an Alphabet of Map
Reading.
Both have been given the
proval of the British War Office,
and the prissier and alphabet had
been accepted as textbooks for
instruction in both the Canadian
Corps and other units of the
British Army.
The primer and alphabet carry
the inscription "By Lieut. David
A. Croll,--Canadian Army Active
Force."
The Wm• in Outline
The primer is a clear outline
of the work of a despatch rider.
The alphabet is printed in colors
and shows clearly what the con-
ventional signs used in marking
maps stand for. For example, a
church with a spire is shown by a
circle with a cross atop the

circle; and, a church with a tower
is a square with a cross atop the
square. Mr. Croll has compiled a
long list of these and they are
set forth in alphabetical array
so that an amateur may take the
alphabet and read his map clearly,
knowing what the different signs
mean.
"Be a Realist" are the con-
cluding three words of the primer.
In that terse exhortation, Mr.
Croll carries into the army the
advice he stressed in civilian life.
Always a visionary, he was, at
the same time, also a realist,
knowing that dreams would conic
true only when realism made the
dream desirable.
In this war the despatch riders
take the place of the runners of
the last war. Where the old run-
ner used to deliver messages on
foot and on the run, the mechan-
ized war has put the runner on
a motorcycle and given speed to
his work.
Must Never Guess
Some of the troubles of the
despatch riders are realized by
the note that one way to measure
distances is by the speedometer
(if it is working). That added bit
in brackets is Mr. Croll's way of
showing the troops that he, too,
understands that the machines do
not always work. So, instead of
sitting back and doing nothing,
he outlines other methods, such
as judging distance by eye, and to
remember that distances appear
different at different speeds.
Being a realist, he impresses on
his readers never to guess, when
lost. The thing to do is to think
your way out of a jam, not guess
your way out. The chap who gets
flustered is out of luck.
He suggests eating the message,
if it is a written one and the
despatch rider is captured by the
enemy. Some runners used to make
slits in their cap linings or cloth-
ing and secrete messages there,
although they always planned to
cat the messages, if they could
get them in their mouths before
the enemy stopped them.
The influence of a year in Eng-
land has caused Mr. Croll to refer
to spark plugs as "sparking
plugs". We won't be surprised if
he even says "My word," or some-
thing like that occasionally.
In writing the primer, Mr. Croll
has taken the lessons that have
been pointed out from time to
time in lectures and he had added
some commonsense suggestions to
the despatch riders so they will
learn to use their heads. He has
put all these together in simple,
readable form. He has followed
his old formula of making every-
thing plain, believing it to be bet-
ter to be so simple everyone can
understand it, than to have it in
language that would be over the
heads of half his readers.
It is one of the beautiful com-
pensations of life that no man
can sincerely try to help an-
other without helping himself.
