A Rosh Hashonah Message
By RABBI MORRIS ADLER
A Rosh Hashonah greeting that is something more
than a perfunctory expression is not easily and simply
formulated in an era like ours. Ours cannot be the way
of superficial optimism. The devastation and tragic ruin
which so many Jewish communities have suffered, and
the insecurity, fear and homelessness of millions of
individual Jews are realities that cannot be waved away
by rhetoric. This is an era of blood and tears for Jewry.
Yet the Jewish reaction to the circumstances of his
day has never been despair, paralysis of will, demorali-
zation.
Three focal points of hope exist for us in the shadow-
bathed picture of the present. The first arises from the
fact that we are no longer alone. Our battle is waged
on a world-wide front. The movement against the Jew,
it is now apparent to all but those who will not see, is
really a war upon all civilization and freedom. We can
and should derive strength from this Providential iden-
tity of our interest with the highest needs and ideals
of enlightened men everywhere.
Our second source of hope is American Jewry.
Segmented, uncertain, groping, ignorant, inert though
large sections of Jewish life are, the five million Jews
on this continent represent a reservoir of potential spirit-
ual and communal strength that cannot be lightly dis-
missed. The opportunity and responsibility of this critical
hour must not be overlooked by American Jewry.
Thirdly, the Yishuv in Palestine by its mere exist
ence serves as a rallying call for courage and sacrifice.
Once again the hand Of Providence is evident in its de-
livery, for the present, from active military attack. The
Yishuv is the most eloquent affirmation on the positive
side of our will to live; of our right to live as a historic
group and of our ability to create and achieve; and on
the negative side it is our most eloquent protest against
the status of refugee-ism which the enemy of freedom
seeks to impose upon us as a people.
I earnestly pray that Jews will devotedly and sacri-
ficially apply themselves to these three great areas of
hope and challenge. May the year 5702 be one of re-
construction and healing for Israel.

With the appointment of Dr.
Efros, the Dropsie College is in-
augurating a new department in
Jewish Philosophy and Hebrew
Literature. It is interesting to
note that in the history of Jew-
ish philosophy some of the most
distinguished philosophers were
also great Hebrew poets. 11)11
Gabirol and Judah ha-Levi are
the outstanding examples. This
year, in commemoration of the
800th anniversary of Judah ha-
Levi, Prof. Efros' course in phil-
osophy will be devoted to_a, crit-
ical study of the work of this
great medieval philosopher.
