Season's Greetings and Best Wishes from Port Huron, IV ichigan

A Grouch Views
the Jewish Year

Observations: Relevant
and Irrelevant

By MARTIN PANZER

Editor's Note:—At this sea-
son when soremn reviews of
the year 5701 are authored,
Martin Panzer, well-known satir-
ical writer, does his own retro-
spect of twelve months. Out of
an assortment of unrelated items
he draws a picture of the Jew-
ish scene that may be fully ac-
curate but is at least—different.
To attempt a comprehensive,
chronological review of the year

Season's Greetings and Best Wishes

5701 would perhaps be beyond
my poor powers in any event;
but seated, as I ant, on a spa-
cious lawn in what is offection-
atcly referred to as the Borscht
Belt of the Empire State, sur-
rounded by little darlings who
won't drink their milk despite
all the shriekings of their dot-
ing mothers rather than by thou-
sands of page§ of reference ma-
terial, I find the task completely
out of the question. If I thus
let you into the great editorial
secret of advance preparation
of published material, it is only
by way of apology for whatever
completeness my review may
lack.
To my mind, the year 5701
stands out in this great country
as the year in which a. recog-
nized American columnist, the
winner of a Pulitzer prize,
Westbrook Pegler by name, in
one fell swoop discarded the -one
thing above all others which
made the country what it has
become alit( substituted therefor

a system of graded citizenships.
Mr. Pegler has, on occasion,
hown evidence of an analytical
mind, and once in a while he
has courageously bucked public
opinion in a manner that showed
logic, if not human feeling.' But
in 5701 Mr. Pegler discovered
a crusade in which it was un-
necessary for him to be bothered
by either. And won't Mr. Pegler
he annoyed to find his latest ac-
complishment scheduled in 5701
as well as in 1941. That's prob-
ably crime enough to make me
a third-class citizen, despite my
New Jersey birth. particularly
since I ant very well aware that
Mr. Pegler is one of the staunch-
est defenders of those of the
Jewish faith who are under at-
tack for the crime of being
JeTish. But you see I don't like
the way Westbrook defende me.
I don't feel his defensive guns
have the correct range, so to
speak.

It is hardly likely that the
year just past sow more than
,its usual quota of Jewish organ-
ization conventions . . . it prob-
ably just SEEMED that way. It
seemed to be a race between
Washington an Atlantic City, al-
though a certain convention
down Georgia way created quite
a stir. And speaking of budgets
and allocations, I can't get out
of my mind the remark of a
pleasant, elderly lady correspond-
ent of the New York Times as
she called for the running story
of a Washington convention.
"There'll be a lot of talk, won't
there?" she asked. And then:
"There'll be a lot of resolutions
passed, too. But you know, I've
found that most of the resolu-
tions are - drawn up in advance
and they're all sure to pass.
Wouldn's it be a better idea for
all these' delegates to contribute
the cost of their trips to the
organization and stay home with
their families?" . You understand,
of course, that I am quoting the
nice lady. Personally, I have no
opinion on the matter.
Despite great expectations, Dr.
Chaim Weizmann came to us
without assurances of the much-
heralded Jewish middle-East
army. It seems that while Mr.
Churchill was all for it, certain
assorted colonial office. janissaries
and others not so stuffed in the
shirt were opposed and, it was
left to Russia to mitigate the
peril of the Middle East. It's
a strange world in which the
haters must he thankful to the
hated, but it always was a
strange world from the very first
biblical tale, and that's no rib.

The year 5701 will also be
noted in historical compendia as
the year in which certain Con-
gressmen and Senators, in a
frenzied desire for peace with the
hapless victim of British aggres-
sion and terrorism, tore a leaf
front the book of the Nazi lamb
and openly published attacks on
the Jews for the involvement of
a .unioue feature which made it
obligatory for Jews to pay in
taxes the cost of publishing de-
famatory remarks against them-
selves. But the American peo-
ple, as usual, in this year gave
evidence of their ever-readiness
to correct whatever mistakes
they may have made by defeat-
ing, several of the wordy Con-
gressional Record Authors when
they ran for re-election.
At the year drew to a close,
some millions of Jews who had
found themselves brought to a
state of suffering than which no
greater could be imagined, soon
witnessed the miracle of the im-
possible when, with the out-
break of the Nazi-Soviet war,
they found their suffering in-
creased . tenfold. I trust I may
be pardoned if my mind recalls
the story of the Jew who threw
his hands aloft and cried: "My
God. we have been the Chosen
People so long . . . won't You
please choose somebody else for
a change?"
No review of a year gone by
can stand unaccompanied by a
forecast of the year to come.
Forecasting is not as difficult a
matter as some may believe. In
this blood-soaked world it is only
necessary to view the future with
the direct possible forebodings,
Fet down your fears and watch
them materialize. And in this
connection, may I say that I ant
not among those who believe
that a prediction that the Jews
will survive "this, too" is a

happy one if I am not personally
included in the rescue.
Well, then, I predict that the
war will drag on and that no
good will come of it any more
than would come of an armed
peace at . this time. I predict
that more governments and lead-
ers will fall. I predict that the
crops that are watered with
blood will not satisfy hunger
and that famine and pestilence
will ravage the world. And I
•predict that in the face of all

-

this the Jews of Amt rica will
assemble throughout 5702 at
conventions and pass resolutions
in favor of good Tveather.
Happy New Year, dear read-
ers, but I doubt it..
