A NEW YEAR MESSAGE

(Continued from Page 7)

By RABBI LEON FRAM

something bellowed through the

barked quick spasms o• wrath,
were more Palestinians training

weapons.
Digging, mending equipment,
wrestling with stores and trans-
Port, doctoring, tapping out wire-
less messages and cooking, Pal-
estinian volunteers are being
fitted for all the services. Else-
where in the Middle East other
units, again all Jews, are being
trained as ground forces in the
R.A.F.; some, unofficially as yet,
are learning the craft of flying.
Most of the Jews at least would
serve, if they could, in the fight-
ing forces. But if narrow limits
have been set to the general
number of Palestinian volunteers
accepted, those set for the com-
batant units are smallest of all.
The largest units are in the
Pioneer Corps. Next largest are
the artisan, mechanical and
transport units.
If you know the faces of
"Egged" bus drivers—and who
• that has lived any length of
time in Palestine does not?—
you might mistake a certain shed
in Training own for an Egged
station. Among the traction en-
gines and close-parked lorries al-
most tell the faces belonged to
Egged Men. In the workshop
nearby a corporal who had been
nine years the mechanic of Tel
Joseph briefly and briskly out-
lined the more virulent diseases
that develop in military rolling-
stock in Palestine. A hollow
voice from beneath an eviscer-
ated gear box confirmed him.

The first of Tishri is designated in the calendar not
only as the beginning of the New Year but as veritably
the anniversary of the creation of the universe.
According to rabbinical doctrine too, the universe
is still unfinished and is still being created.
It is the special privilege of man to be the partner
of God in the creation of the world.
Man and God are together engaged in the enter-
prise of destroying Evil and establishing the Good.
Never before in history have we witnessed .so clear-
cut a battle between Good and Evil as we witness today.
In our New Year prayer let us invoke the strength to
fight the battle of righteousness agAinst wickedness. Let
us summon the power to fight the battle of freedom
against oppression. • Let us declare our readiness to make
every personal sacrifice that the struggle may require
of us. Let us determine to give generously of our help
to every victim of the struggle and to our every ally in
the conflict. Thus, through the power of our prayer,
our effort and our sacrifice, may the year 5702 be
crowned with the greatest achievement man has ever
striven for—victory over the forces of Evil, and the
opportunity. for the creation of a new world.
