Pays $100 to Hias for 50c
Luncheon Given Him as
Penniless Immigrant 33
Years Ago

NEW YORK.—A former im-
migrant, now a leading manu-
facturer in . New England, read
in the newspapers an announce-
ment concerning the $1,000,000
drive of the Hebrew Sheltering
and Immigrant Aid Society
(HIAS) for its war-time "Rescue
Through Emigration" service to
refugees. This recalled to him,
a kindly service rendered hint 33
years ago by the same organiza-
tion upon his arrival to the
United States. The thought re-
sulted in his contribution of
$100 towards the campaign.
The former immigrant, L. W.
Phillips, arrived at Ellis Island
in' 1907, a penniless youth. His
first meal was given to him by
HIAS. Remitting now his $100
contribution he wrote: "In 1907
the BIAS gave me a lunch box
and 50c at Ellis Island. Your
investment plus the compound
interest has now reached to
$100. I am, therefore, pleased
to pay my debt and wish to
thank your organization for the
excellent work you are doing for
immigrants everywhere."

"THT RABBI AND HIS EARLY
MINISTRY"

The alumni lectures at the He-
brew Union College in 1940
were delivered by Rabbi Abraham
J. Feldman of Hartford, Conn.
These addresses have just ap-
peared in a volume entitled "The
Rabbi and His Early Ministry"
under the headings: Rabbinic
Leadership, The Rabbi in the
Smaller Community, The Rabbi
and the Jewish Community, and
The Rabbi and His Own Faith. In
addition to these alumni lectures
the volume contains an address
by Rabbi Feldman delivered on
the occasion of the 20th anni-
versary of his ordination, "What
the Rabbinate Does to the Rab-
bi". This book will be found of
special value to the young rabbi
at the outset of his career, but
older men in the rabbinate,
whether reform, conservative or
orthodox, will also find it valu-
able. It will prove useful as well
to lay leaders of congregations
who will find here a guide as to
what may be legitimately ex-
pected of the rabbi and what the
rabbi may expect from his con-
gregation. Bloch Publishing Co„

BUILDING ROADS OF HOPE IN PALESTINE r .

4

New colonies for Jewish refugees who continue to enter Palestine despite
the war are being built in the Jewish homeland through the support provided
by American Jewry through the instrumentality of the United Jewish Appeal
for Refugees, Overseas Needs and Palestine. Photo shows Jewish settlers
building a road in a new Palestine colony established by the United Palestine
Appeal, which is represented together with the Joint Distribution Committee
and National Refugee Service in the combined campaign of the United
Jewish Appeal.

JEWS GIVES $25,000 TO
Y. M. C. A.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex.—One
of Corpus Christi's leading Jew-'
ish citizens, Simon Gugenheim,

has donated property worth $25,-
000 to the local Young Men's
Christian Association, it was re-
vealed here.
Mr. Gugenheim's gift was an-

nounced on the eve of a fund-
raising drive launched by the
Corpus Christi Y. M. in an effort
to secure money for a new
building.

IMMORTALITY
Orthodox Jewish groups teach
resurrection of the body, while
Reform Jews believe in immor-
ality of the soul alone.
