The New Year 5702

jn its ruthlessness to the speech of Charles
A. Lindbergh.
The time to attack anti-Semitism is
when it rears its head; and the way to
ward off the rise of bigotry is not by
fanning is, as Senator Nye and those who
support him in his utterances do.
Senator Claude Pepper of Florida had
his say a few days ago when he declared
that Senator Nye was assaulting "the mo-
tion picture industry primarily because
some of its members are Jewish and
secondly because he didn't like their at-
titude."
This is tantamount to saying that Sena-
tor Nye is an anti-Semite.
Would that it were unnecessary to say
this.
But since those who are instigating the
attack on the movies state that they dis-
like the pro-British (pro-democratic?)
attitude of the movies, it is not out of
place to ask them whether they (Whee-
ler, Clark, Nye, et al) would rathr make
pro-Nazi pictures.
The isolationist group began by harm-
ing the Jews. Then came the movie in-
quisition (Dorothy Thompson likens it to
the Dreyfus Case) and the Lindbergh ad-
dress. Now, their position is clear in the
eyes of unprejudiced Americans. They
are merely dragging a red herring on
their pro-Nazi paths.

Demand Justice NOW

A joint appeal issued by the American
and World Jewish Congresses and re-
leased by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, asks the
leader§ of democratic opinion in the lands
ranged against Nazism to offer immediate
assurances that Jews will be given an
opportunity "in fraternal collaboration
with their fellow victims of all races and
faiths to rebuild their lives in security,
justice and honor."
It is a timely appeal and it should be
followed up by declarations of a similar
nature b_y ALL other Jewish organiza-
tions, in this country and in all democratic
lands where Jews still have a voice.
Unless there is immediate action there
may be a betrayal of Jewish rights. Such
a danger must be avoided.
"Act NOW."
This should be the appeal to all Jewish
leaders, and they in turn should be asked
to act at once in conformity with the
effort for the guarantee of justice set in
motion by the Jewish Congress.

Again we affirm • that it shall be A
Happy New Year!
Tragedy stalks throughout the world.
There is suffering everywhere,—and
want and misery are threatening to ruin
the morale of peoples.
What should Jews say?
Should they stop wishing for A Happy
New Year?
If that day ever comes—and it can not
come—then it will mean the abandon-
ment of all principles upon which are
founded the sacred ideals of a great
morality.
That which has made us an eternal
People has placed demands upon us. It
has charged us with the duty of protect-
ing a moral code which is based on faith
and courage and confidence.
This moral code helps us keep our
heads high, it admonishes us never to lose
hope, it tells us that' decency will yet
rule the earth.

Senator Nye's Stand

Senator Gerald P. Nye's new role as
inquisitor in the so-called movie investi-
gation places him in a most ludicrous
position.
He states that if anti-Semitism comes
he will be the first to attack bigotry ; but
he warns Jews that they are themselves
inspiring anti-Semitism.
Which is a 'Meet ungracious act, equal

Thus, Gen. Stark spoke briefly and
tersely to his men. It was a direct chal-
lenge as to who was worth more, "a
bought soldier or a man fighting for the
freedom of his country," as PM ana-
lyzed it.
Gen. Stark's challenge is a challenge to
this very day, and we may well ask one
another, in his words, and in our own:
"What is your worth in the present battle
for freedom?"

I HEREBY RESOLVE

Resolutions and Greetings for the New Year

By DAVID DEUTSCH

• Not to look under the bed
for an anti-Semite every night
before retiring.
Not to gush in a torrent of
hosannas when a non-Jew says
something nice about the Jew-
ish people.
To go to the front line in the
fight against anti-Semitism and
not send a goy to fight our
battles.
To express yourself on the
war without worrying about be-
ing called a Jewish war-monger.
To go to synagogue more than
once a year so that it will not
be necessary for the congrega-
tion to run a bingo game to
win popular support.
To - play bridge without call-
ing upon the Ribbono Shel Olem
to pay more attention to your
cards than to the Jews under
Hitler.
To let your wife play Mall
Jong without condemning it as
an incurable Jewish women's

disease.

To urge your Jewish commun-
ity forum to invite a prominent
Jew to its rostrum once in a
while.
Not to lose your respect for
an outstanding Jewish author
when he decides to take up the
cudgels for his people.
To pray for more organization
and less organizations in Jewish
life.
