LONDON. (JPS) — The Swe-
dish pro-Nazi newspaper Afton-
bladet finds a new justification
for the establishment of ghettos.
This time it is "protection of the
Jews". According to the news-
paper, the ghettoization of Lith-
uanian Jewry was made neces-
sary by extensive Jewish massa-
cres immediately upon German
entry into the country.
Killings of Jews raged for
days, says the Nazi sheet. The
German authorities were there-

fore forced to rush completion
of the enclosures in order to
save the Jews from the wrath of
the rest of the population.
It is perhaps idle to ask how
the Jews managed to exist un-
harmed until the Nazi "liber-
ators" arrived.

The Aftonbladet also tells the

Lithuanian Jews, young and old

80 Refugee Land, Some from

VISIT THE FAMOUS
NEW YORK. (JPS) — The
Spanish liner Magallanes landed
80 refugees at her Brooklyn
pier, after having discharged 374
passengers at Havana, from
where they were expecting to go
to South American destinations.
)The refugees disclosed that 33
of their number, who had visas
for Venezuela and Colombia,
were told by Cuban authorities
that their papers were invalid
and would be shipped back to
Europe.
One of the passengers, J. H.
Westreich, described the plight
of thousands of Jews working
in the labor camps of northern
Africa on the construction of
the trans-Sahara railroad to
Dakar. They are ill from tropical
diseases, sleep in holes scooped
in the sand and covered with
pieces of canvas and are alive
with lice and fleas, Mr. Westreich

(Megillah 27a).
Men commonly think accord-
ing to their inclinations, speak
according to their learning and
imbibed opinions, but generally
act according to custom.
—Bacon.
Theophrastus, urging men to
acquire learning, states the case
thus: "The man of learning is
the only person in the world
who is neither a stranger when
in a foreign land, nor friendless
when he has lost his intimates
and relatives; on the contrary,
he is a citizen of every country,
and can fearlessly look down
upon the troublesome accidents
of fortune- But she who thinks
himself entrenched in defences
not of learning but of luck,
moves in slippery paths, struggl-
ing through life unsteadily and
insecurely." — Vitruvius, Roman
