100 Years of Hebrew Publication

JERUSALEM. (Palcor) — A
Cultural Anniversary, as it was
termned, was recently observed
with the publication of a special
issue of the periodical Ba'Mishor
on the 100th anniversary of the
first publication of a Hebrew
book in Jerusalem. In the last
century, over 6,000 Hebrew
books have appeared in this city.
The first Hebrew volume was
printed in 1475 and was a com-
mentary of Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo
ben Isaaci), in the Middle Ages,
while shortly afterwards the
Pentateuch appeared at Bologna.
Since the invention of the print-
ing press and of Hebrew type
there have been 30,000 Hebrew
books issued, several of which
have run into a number of edi-
tions. The Mishnah alone has
had 120 editions, the Talmud 50,
and the Passover Haggadah

some 1,300. In the 465 years
since Hebrew books were first
printed, until 1940, there had
been 20,000 separate works. Na-
ples and Rome were among the
early publishing centers.
Twenty per cent of all He-
brew books published in the
world have come from Jerusalem.
The first work printed in this
city was Avodath Hakodesh by
Rabbi Haim Josepuh David Azu-
lai, which has gone into 30 edi-
tions in the ensuing 100 years.
The first Hebrew press to be
set up in Jerusalem was that
of Rabbi Israel Back, who
transferred it from Safed; on
his death it was taken over by
his son Nissan Back, who found-
ed is synagogue in the Old City
of Jerusalem. He sold it in 1880
to J. M. Hershenzon. This press,
with an historic printing ma-
chine received from Sir Moses
Montefiore, later passed to Sam-
uel Zuckerman, and is now con-
ducted by his son, Haim Zucker-
man.
The Saloman 'Press, founded
by Rabbi Yoel Moshe Salomon—
whose son, Mr. tlaim Salomon,
one of the elders of the Jewish
community in Jerusalem, is a
Municipal Councillor — was for
many years in the Nachlath Siva
quarter of Jerusalem, one of the
first houses to be put up outside
the walls of the Old City being
built by him. About a year ago,
when the house was demolished,
it went into Chief Rabbi Kook
Street. The printing works of
the Editor of Havatzeleth, first
Hebrew periodical issued in Jeru
salem by Rabbi Israel Dov Frum-
kin (father of Mr. -Justice Gad
Frumkin, C.B.., of the Palestine
Supreme Court), is now called
Sinai. Other Jewish printing
presses dating back many years
which are still operating in Jeru-
salem are Moriah, Goldberg,
Weiss, Cahana, Hashayish, Az-
riel and Cohen. In his time, Rab-
bi Israel Back, Jerusalem's first
printer, printed 121 books.
Among the leading Hebrew pub-
lishing egncerns today, some of
them having been transferred
from Germany, are Shocken's
Verlag, Achiassaf, Bamberger
and Wahrmann, Lewin-Epstein
Brothers, Rubin Mass, Moadon
Hassefer, Ever and Kiryath
Sefer (of the Hebrew University
Press).

GENEVA (JPS) — Following
the example of Germany, France,
Nazi Poland and other Nazi-oc-
cupied countries, Rumania has
appointed M. Danilescu as Com-
missioner for Jewish Affairs. He
was formerly director of Jewish.
forced labor. His first act was to
order Jews still remaining in
Jassy to wear a yellow star on
their clothes.

MEZUZOT

Mezuzot (literally, doorposts)
are receptacles containing trans-
criptions of Deuteronomy 6.4-9
and 11.13-21, which are attached
by the observant Jew to the
doorposts f every room. These
inscription : are intended to re-
mind man, as he enters home or
leaves it, of the unity of God
and the duty of loving Him.

Somewhere along the crowded
line of good-will organizations
there ought to be one which will
give advice to Jewish-looking
Gentiles on how to behave and
make friends so that Jews will
not be blamed for their indis
cretions . . . The other day we
were at a small private beach
run by a man named Earnhof-
fer, a nice chap but 100%
Aryan . . . A party of six Irish
people came to the locker office.
They were told the rates: 50
cents for bathers and 25 cents
for non-bathers. The four old
women who had only come to
kibbitz the swimmers revolted.
Turning away angrily they mut-
tered that these Jews were going
too far and ruining things . . .
The young man who was guilty
was a Nordic with a bit of
"alien" Indian blood in him.
