Birkhead Shows Gains and Losses For Past Year An annual balance sheet show- ing the gains and losses of de- mocracy for the year 1940 was made public by L. M. Birkhead, national director of Friends of Democracy, Inc. Although the tabulation shows that democracy lost much during the last 12 months, mainly as a result of the extensive conquests of Nazi Ger- many, it also indicates that these losses were partially off-set by a number of significant gains. IIitler was by ail odds democ- racy's enemy number one in 1910, Dr. Birkhead said. On the other hand, the election of Franklin 1). Roosevelt was appraised by Dr. Birkhead as the significant vic- tory for democracy because the dictators "desired the defeat of the President." Dr. Birkhead also saw "the rise of appeasement in the United States as a blow to democracy." Gains for Democracy During 1940 Dr. Birkhead listed the follow- ing as definite gains for de- maracy: 1) Defeat of at least eight ex- 7 treme rightists, including con- gressional candidate McWilliams, who campaigned for public office. New Year's Greetings to All 2) Adoption of new code by the National Association of STADIUM TIRE AND Broadcasters which made it im- possible for Father Coughlin to BATTERY SERVICE renew his contracts with member stations. EDWARD J. JEFFRIES, Jr. MAYOR OF DETROIT discontinue his pro-Nazi activities. 10) Precautionary measures for economic and military defense adopted at the Havana Confer- ence. 11) Prompt prosecution and conviction of Klansmen in At- lanta who were charged with murder in the flogging cases. 12) Split in German-American Bund resulting from struggle for leadership following Fritz Kuhn's conviction. 13) Series of exposes of Nazi activities published in PM, the New York Post, The Nation, The New Republic, The New York Herald Tribune and other im- portant publications — much of which came from the files of Friends of Democracy. 14) Several such nationalistic groups as the Armenian Revo- lutionary Federation and the ODWU forced by the pressure of publicity to repudiate Nazism. Losses for Democracy During 1940 Dr. Birkhead listed the follow- ing as definite losses for de- mocracy: 1) The rise of appeasement in the United States must be con- sidered a great blow insofar as it provides the rallying point for all pro-Nazi and pro-Fascist ele- ments throughout the country. 2) In defeat the rightist candi- dates for office polled 16 per cent of the votes cast in their districts. If this percentage holds through- out the country, nearly 13,000,000 of the nation's 80,000,000 potential voters may be counted upon to support a rightist candidate. 3) Both the Nazis and Com-• munists have formed peace fronts for the purpose of sabotaging na- tional defense, advocating appease- ment, opposing aid to Britain, etc. 4) Nazi organizations have add- ed anti-Catholicism to anti-Semit- ism in their propaganda. 5) Since Colescott became Im- perial Wizard, the KKK has ex- perienced a great resurgence. The New Jersey Realm of the Klan cooperated with the German- American Bund. 6) The Fundamentalists, who reach more people than any other single Protestant group, are as- suming an increasing importance in the pro-Nazi propaganda of anti-Semitism. 7) The Dies Committee has aid- ed the cause of Nazism by exag- gerating the importance of the Communist threat. 8) A majority of the 17 Chris tian Fronters were acquitted of conspiracy against the Federal government. A decision has not yet been reached in the case of the others. 9) Tremendously powerful per- sons such as Ford and Lindbergh are active in the cause of ap- peasement through such organiza- tions as the America First Corn- mittee, No Foreign Wars Commit- tee, etc, 10) Several rightist Congress- men, including Thill, Sweeney and Hoffman, were re-elected to office. 11) Fall of France and smaller countries. "Although Hitler has overrun Western democracy on continental Europe," Dr. Birkhead stated, "although France has fallen, al- though appeasement is on the in- crease in the United States, there are many reasons for us to feel fortified in the future in the demo- cratic way of life. England is holding out and is now considered to have at least a 50-50 chance to win. The election of Franklin D. Roosevelt was a terrific blow to dictatorship because all the dic- tators desired his defeat. There is a new alertness in the coun- try. There is a tremendous move- ment toward national unity behind democratic processes. Hitler has shocked the pro-democracy de- ments in all parts of the United States out of their slumber. For the first time in over a decade we are experiencing a militant, popu- lar pro-democracy upsurge." 17 Our Sincere Wish `That the New Year brings peace and happiness to every one of you. t‘ PRINGLE FURNITURE CO. 2990 W.
