DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and the Legal Chronicle

Joy in one's work is the con-
summate tool.—Phillips Brooks.

Democracy Cannot Grant Immunity
To Intolerance, Conference Hears

NEW YORK (JPS)—Amidst
a series of solemn, lengthy and
academic papers, Prof. Paul
Weiss of Bryn Mawr College
struck life into the Second Con-
ference on Science, Philosophy
and Religion being held at Co-
lumbia University in the pres-
ence of Catholic, Protestant and
Jewish ministers, educators,
scholars and writers when he
bluntly declared that "no one
can reasonably expect to pro-
mote tolerance by granting im-
munity to intolerance. Tolerance
demands respect for all forms
in which the good appears; it
does not demand indifference to
evil."
Prof. Weiss' paper was one of
a series of discussions on the
relation of science, philosophy
and religion to "the democratic

way of life". The four-day ses-
sions, broken up into round
tables, heard prepared statements
from scores of the foremost uni-
versity teachers, jurists, clergy-
men and authors. Among those
who participated were Rabbi Ben
Zion Bokser, • Prof. Abraham
Cronbach of Cincinnati, Dr.
Alexander Marx of the Jewish
uel Cohon of the Hebrew Union
Theological Seminary, Prof. Sam-
College, Rabbi Simon Greenberg
of Philadelphia, Prof. Morris R.
Cohen and Dr. Paul Klapper,
President of Queens College.
"There must be limits to the
freedom accorded speech, the
press, to what is urged or dog-
matically affirmed," Prof. Weiss
declared in discussing "democ-
racy and the rights of man".
"Otherwise the society will suc-
ceed in nothing so much as in
nourishing and making possible
the success of those concerned
faith in democracy does not mean
with destroying it," he said. "A
a blind extension of the prin-
ciple of tolerance, to cover no
matter what abuse, or a faith
in the ability of men to with-
stand any attack, no matter what
the device. A positive and dy-
namic democracy holds on to
sonic things and rejects others,
it fights against all attempts to
deny or limit the principles on
which it rests."
That this view was not uni-
formly acceptable even to the
other Jewish participants in the
Conference was reflected in a
criticism by the philosopher,
Prof. Morris R. Cohen, who is
associated with the Peace Insti-
tute of the American Jewish
Committee. He commented that
the paper was "an eloquent plea
for tolerant and liberal policies
with which I heartily agree. It
seems to me, however, to fol-
low more the contours of the
heart's desire of the author and
other liberals like myself, rather
than the cautions set up by phil-
osophy".
But Prof. Weiss was support-
ed by Dr. John L. Childs of
Teachers' College, Columbia Uni-
versity, who stated that as a
member of the American Civil
Liberties Union he had studied
free speech in action and had
become convinced of the neces-
sity of curbing it in certain

cases.

At a previous session Van
Wyck Brooks, noted essayist,
had condemned some of the mod-
ern writers for being on the
periphery of life, including such
faddists as Gertrude Stein and
the style of the late Marcel
Proust in his indictment. Liter-
ature to be helpful in the mod-
ern world, he declared, must be
informed with such themes as
courage, justice, mercy, honor
and love.
The Bible as the basis of all
democratic thinking was under-
lined by Professor Millar Bur-
rows of Yale University in a
paper which was part of a dis-
cussion of "The Religious Back
ground of Democratic Ideas".
Prof. Burrows observed that "as
a particular form of government
or set of institutions, political
democracy does not appear in
the Bible. What does appear is
the basic conviction of the worth
and rights of every man, from
the king to the meanest peasant,
which underlies any valid ideal
of democracy."
Dr. Louis Finkelstein, Presi-
dent of the Jewish heological
Seminary, was named chairman
of a steering committee for the
Conference in its future activi-
ties.

Further Axis Film Importations
Prohibited By State Department

NEW YORK (JPS)
By re-
fusing to issue a license for the
release of impounded German pro-
paganda films, the State Depart-
ment has banned the further im-
portation of Nazi moving pictures•
such as "Victory in the West" and
"The Campaign in Poland", it has
been learned here.
A total of 16 films consigned
to UFA Films, a subsidiary of
the German film trust, have been
held up by customs agents. UFA
applied for a release more than
eight weeks ago, but its demand
has been met with only silence.

tion, and ever keeping pace with
the progress of Christianity.
