"Saved from the depths of the
ocean, but again in urgent need
for Rescue"—this is the strange
but true condition in which Anna
Gutmann and her daughter, Ann-
ette, 10, find themselves in Lis-
bon, Portugal, the only European
port now open for overseas im-
migration. Their story is typical
of the tragedies of many thou-
sands of refugees who are being
aided by the "Rescue hrough
Emigration" program of the
Hebrew Sheltering and Immi-
grant Aid Society.
Formerly of Lodz, Poland,
Anna Gutmann accompanied by
her daughter, sought to join her
husband who had preceded them
in finding a temporary haven in
Shanghai, China. The HIAS-ICA,
world-wide immigrant aid service
helped them reach the Atlantic
coast and board the SS..Ganda
—which sailed on June 20 for
Shanghai vb. Mozambique. The
ship was torpedoed at a distance

24 hours from the coast.
Mother and daughter spent three
nights and two days in the Atlan-
tic without a drop of water or a
morsel of food before a Spanish
fishing boat rescued and brought
them back to the mainland. HIAS
ICA headquarters in Lisbon re-
sumed interest in the case and
mother and daughter are now
waiting an opportunity to set sail
again.

Lappin Candidacy
Gets Wide Support

A. C. Lappin's candidacy for
the City Council of Detroit is
receiving wide support.
It was indicated this week that
Mr. Lappin is being given the
endorsements of important lab-
or, civic and social groups.
Attention was called this week
to the fact that the Primaries
took place on the second clay of
Succoth. Orthodox voters are
therefore urged to arrange to
vote immediately after sundown
in order not to lose their right
to vote.

LONDON (JPS)—From Istan-

bul comes word that 50,000 Jews
of Lithuania and other Baltic
states were spared Nazi torture
by speedy action of the Soviet
government. According to the re-
port, just before the German
invasion Soviet authorities eva-
cuated Jews of Lithuania, Es-
tonia and Latvia who were be-
tween the ages of 16 and 60 and
resettled them on the land in
Soviet Mongolia.
Most of the evacuees were
skilled workers. Communists and
non-Communists, Jews and non-
Jews were treated alike in the
resettlement process.

Labor is discovered to be the
grand conqueror, enriching and
building up nations more surely
than the proudest battles.
