DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and the Legal Chronicle

A NEW YEAR'S PRAYER

By DR. LEO M. FRANKLIN

J

Our God and Gor of our Fatehrs, in Whose
hands are the destinies of men and nations, though the
hour be dark and the way uncertain for Thy children,
we kno wthat Thou art near us and that therefore in
some not too distant day, light will again break through
the darkness, and the way that shall lead to restored
peace and justice and brotherhood and humanity and
the rule of right shall be made clear to us.
We pray that in the hastening of that better day,
Thy children of the House of Israel may, in accordance
with their high destiny, have a full and honorable part
to play.
We pray that out of the martyfdom, of which we
have been the unhappy victims, in other days and in
these days, there may ultimately come to us a sense of
spiritual mastery and that, strengthened by the con-
sciousness that Thy hand has never been too short to
save, we may look to Thee as did our fathers, for help
and guidance. Out of the tragedies that now beset us,
may there eventually come that triumph of the spirit
which will enable us to say, as did our fathers, "Not
unto us; not unto us, but unto Thy name be the glory."
We pray Thee, especially that while no sacrifice
which we may be called upon to make for our less for-
tunate brethren in days like these, can be over-great,
we may yet realize that Judaism and philanthropy are
not co-extensive and inter-changeable terms; for though
charity has always been a part of our religion, it has
never been a whole of it. May we be spurred therefore,
to carry out our historic. mission as messengers of truth
and prophets of righteousness to our own brethren and
to all the peoples of the world.
We pray Thee, our Father, to give us the courage
of self-criticism. May we realize our own weaknesses
and shortcomings. As a result of earnest self-examina-
tion on this Day of Judgment may we dedicate ourselves
to the high and holy task of strengthening the bonds
of brotherhood between man and man and especially
between Jew and Jew. May we be loyal to the convic-
tions of our own souls.? yet be moved to work in harmony
with all our brethren. May , we seek our own goals not
by crushing those who do 'not see eye to eye with us,
but rather by pursuing our own way in decency and
dignity and helping others, so far as we may, to further
every cause that is based in righteousness.
We pray Thee, oh, God, that during this New Year
there may come peace within the House of Israel and
peace to all the peoples of the earth. May tyranny be
defeated and humanity prevail. May sin be destroyed
and sinners be made to see that righteousness alone
saveth from death.
This is the prayer that we lift to Thy throne at
this season of the changing years, 0 Thou, upon Whose
loving care we throw ourselves. Grant it, we pray Thee,
Thou Father of all. Amen.

Religious Books Destroyed
By Nazis are Repro-
duced in America

Because of the Nazi destruc-
tion of Jewish publishing centers
in Eastern Europe, and to pro-'
vide suitable -textbooks for the
Jewish clay schools under its sup-
ervision, the United Yeshivos
Foundation of New York has
beguh publication of the first
American edition of the Baby-
lonian Talmud. The initial trac-
tates of this important literature
of Jewish antiquity to be pro-
duced here are called Baba Mezia,
devoted respectively to the laws
of damages and commercial law.
There are altogether sixty-three
treatises in the Talmud, which
is the body of law, legal discus-
sions, and legonlry that grew
out of the biblical code. Of the
two versions, formed in . Jerusa-
lem and Babylon, the latter is
the more extensive and authori-
tative. It was studied by ad-
vanced Jewish students in every
part of the world, until both
schools and books were destroy-
ed by Nazi aggression.

NEW YORK (JPS) — Using
as a slogan "a Bible in the hands
of every American," the Laymen's
National Committee has desig-
nated the week from December
8 to 14 as Bible Week, during
which the American people will
be reminded of the basic values
of the Holy Scriptures as an anti-
dote to the hatred of "Mein
Kampf."
This marks the first time in a
country given to "weeks" that a
seven-day period will be set aside
"to help forge American unity of
spirit against totalitarian aggres-
sion" by stressing the Bible, ac-
cording to Dr. Frank Kingdon,
honorary chairman of the nation-
wide campaign.
