New Jersey Hires Four to Peace rules the day, whea)
reason rules the mind.
Fight Its Own Attorney
—William Collins.
General

TRENTON, N. J. (JPS)—A
strange situation in which the
State of New Jersey has been
forced to hire four private law-
yers to appear in a case against
its own Attorney General arose
here as David T. Wilentz under-
took on behalf of Jersey City to
attack the constitutionality of
the State's rail tax laws.
Wilentz is following a proced-
ure not used in the past 30
years. One of the attorneys op-
posing him will be Herbert J.
Ilannoch, of Newark.

EUROPE'S PLIGHT LIKE THAT
OF JEWS IN ANCIENT EGYPT,
DECLARES BERLE

NEW YORK (JPS) — The
plight of European nations now
occupied by Nazi Germany is
like that of the Jews in Egyptian
captivity during ancient times,
declared Adolf A. Berle, Jr., As-
sistant Secretary of State, be-
fore the Conference on Science,
Philosophy and Religion held at
Columbia University.
Drawing a modern parallel,
Mr. Berle asserted that a cap-
tive may be a slave, but his mind
is free.
He maintained that the Nazis
are keeping an elaborate card
index of all expressions by Amer-
ican citizens in order to classify
their points of view "for future
reference".

Dubinsky Attacks Jewish People's
Committee As Communist

NEW YOYRK (JPS)—Refus-
ing to appear at a rally of the
Jewish Peoples' Committee"- on the
ground that the committee is a
Communist-controlled group, Da-
vid Dubinsky issued a scathing
condemnation of the turncoat
policies of the organization. The
president of the International
Ladies' Garment Workers Union
said, in a letter to Arthur Os-
man, who had invited him to
speak at a mass meeting in sup-
port of the President's policies:
"Your conversion to the support
of President Roosevelt's foreign
policies is purely an opportunis-
tic show, which is likely to un-
dergo an overnight alteration
with a change of scenery in the
international arena."

Trees Planted in Palestine for
Sara Roosevelt

Louis Rose Co.

13

NEW YORK (JPS)—Because
"she exemplified the true spirit
of youth", and because of "her
sympathy with the goal of re-
building a Jewish Homeland in
Palestine", Mrs. Sara Delano
Roosevelt, the mother of the
President, will have a group of
trees near Nazareth planted in
her memory by the Junior Hada-
ssah, it was announced by that
organization.

Ghetto for Germans in Chile
Possible

WASHINGTON (JPS)---When
South America began to get
tough with its Nazis, a mass
exodus of Germans to Chile be-
gan. The reason for this, says
Peter Edson of the New York
World Telegram, is that Chile
has been most sympathetic to
Nazi Germany. If, after a short
time, the Germans in Chile grow
unruly, South Americans predict
that Chileans will set up a ghetto
in Santiago, styled in the fash-
ion of the ghettos in Poland.
Only this time Nazis will lan-
guish in these settlements, rath-
er than Jews.
