Ickes Hopes New Year Will Bring Peace with
Freedom for All

BY THE HON. HAROLD L. ICKES
U. S. Secretary of the Interior
(Written Especiall y for The Detroit Jewish Chronicle)

Another year in which the forces of freedom have
valiantly resisted oppressive hordes is Coming to a close.
Men and women have continued to struggle to maintain
the spark of humanity, democracy and justice without
which we will all be plpnged into an abyss so deep that
it will seem like eternitY before we can slowly and pain-
fully drag ourselves back to even the low place which
we have called civilization.
But in this fog and storm we must retain our hope
and continue our striving. Democracy must and will
succeed in overcoming its antagonists, but success will
come only if we give voluntarily, without stint in the
unified national effort to maintain our institutions, to
leave them not only intact but enhanced for those who
will come after us.
On the eve, then, of the New Year 5702, I greet
the people of the Jewish faith and express the hope
that the New Year will bring not only a surcease of
hostilities and a return of peace, but also that peoples
here and abroad will regain the freedoms and the oppor-
tunity for the pursuit of happiness which God has or-
dained for them.

RELIGIOUS INSIGNIA ON
BOXING APPAREL BANNED

CHICAGO — (Religious News
Service)—President Joe Triner
of the National Boxing Associa-
tion has requested all NBA states
to prohibit the use of national-
istic or religious insignia on box-
ing apparel to "eliminate racial
or religious animosity among
boxing fans." He said the rul-
ing would not. apply to special
tournaments sponsored by such
organizations.
