`America and Palestine Remain Our Sole Hopes'

By LAWRENCE W. CROHN
President, Zionist Council of Detroit

•

Each year with monotonous strain, we bewail the
sorrows and troubles of our people. This will be no
exception. America and Palestine remain our sole hopes.
Of our position in America others will speak. As for
Palestine, it is with renewed hope and encouragement
that we face the New Year. A year ago our position
in Eretz Israel was hazardous to an extent that we could
not admit. The great Juggernaut from the West came
thundering down„ ever closer, to the land of Palestine.
Intrigue in the neighboring countries serves to accentuate
the peril. Bombs were dropping upon the Holy Land!
How has the situation changed for the better?
Britain has finally acted in the Near East. Syria, Iraq
and Iran have been liberated from the machinations of
Hitler's agents. At a recent meeting called by Prince
Feisel near Mecca, the Arab leaders from the countries
of the Near East proclaimed their confidence in Great
Britain and the Democracies. •
The drive on Suez from Lybia has been stayed. The
Blitzkreig into Russia is now reduced' into a war of
attack and counter attack. Turkey remains neutral—
The Yishub in Palestine is comparatively safe and again
may turn to rebuilding and reconstruction.
It is not too early to give thought to the future.
With the well earned right to be bold, we shall demand
a free and autonomous Palestine for the Jews. Let
there be an end to the Jewish Problem. The cringing
Jew must disappear from the face of the Earth. Our
record in Palestine entitles us to the utmost considera-
tion of the Civilized World.
We shall never exist half-slave and half free. For
Zionists this is a truism. May the Jewish People in the
coming year be . strengthened and united behind the
Resolve to salvage our stricken brethren to Maintain
Jewish self-respect, and to have - Faith in the - Destiny
and immortality of Israel.

Japan's Anti-Semitism Fails to
Strike Fire

NEW YORK (IPS) -- Japan's
first anti-Jewish meeting, held by
the Anti-Espionage League, was
a dismal failure, according to rt
report received . here. The, rally.
which consumed four weary hours,
brought out only 1,000 people and
resulted in a windy resolution
that the attempt of the Jews to
dominate the world is incompatible
with .Japanese ideals.
The fact that there are only
320 Jews in Japan, most of whom
are refugees soon to leave for
China, has seriously hampered
General Senjuro Nayashi, direc-
tor of the Great Japanese East
Asia Development League, and
other German-dominated Japanese
in their efforts to stir up a vio-
lently anti-Semitic movement in
the country.
Teaching the Japanese to hate
the eves is goingto be a difficult.
job. The average Japanese knows
only Japanese and foreigners.
"What is a Jew?" is likely to be
his comment.

NEW YORK (JPS) — An ex-
pose of the pro-Nazi activities of
Gaston Ilenry-Haye, Vichy Am-
bassador to the United States, in
the New York Herald-Tribune
brought down an official protest
from the Petain regime which the
New York paper was quick to
answer.
"That any protest at all has
been made officially by the Vichy
government," says the newspaper
editorially, "is a rather depres-
sing measure of the distance
which that government has trav-
eled from democracy. It takes on
an ironical tinge from the fact
that Ambassador Henry-Haye,
when he arrived in this country
it year ago, replied to questions
concerning the anti-Semitism of
certain French newspapers by
stating that journalistic attacks
upon the Jews were allowed only
because of the government's
'liberal' attitude toward t h e,

unkindness in another.—Landor.
