BEST WISHES FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR

MILES L. WYMAN

By RABBI M. J. WOHLGELERNTER

"ToSHeV enosh ad dakko"—Thou turnest man "to
contrition, and sayest, Return ye children of man (Psalm
NC).
The verse quoted may, perhaps, serve us as a mes-
sage for the year 5702. As we approach "Tov SHin Beis"
in Hebrew chronology, man is on the brink of disaster.
Cataclysmic epochs like our own invariably bring with
them a reawakening of religious and moral sentiments.
In our own period, too, There are signs of penitence.
The sorely tried Jews in the Eastern European ghet-
tos prepare themselves for the coming of the Messiah,
and among the Yiddish intellectual circles in America,
there is a movement for returning to some form of active
religious Judaism.
These vague emotions ought to find expression in
one central idea. Jewish communal endeavor in this
country should be directed during the coming year to
the furtherance of at least one item in the program of
internal reconstruction.
The observance of the Sabbath has long been recog-
nized by religious and nationalistic spokesmen alike as
the key to the preservation of Jewish life and the ulti-
mate redemption of our people. All our endeavors in
the fields of Jewish education, the, synagogue and even
Zionism will, in the last analysis, depend for their suc-
cess upon the reinstatement of the sacred day to its posi-
tion of supremacy in Jewish life.
Let us learn to spell the forthcoming Hebrew year.
SHaBaT, a word which also has the connotation of
return, repentance. Schools should give Shabbos a more
prominent place in their curricula. Organizations could
adopt it as a project for the year. Homes, especially
those recently set up by younger people, might be `won
for practical suggestions of its observance. Synagogues
should assume the responsibility for the program.
The closing in Detroit of the majority of Jewish
bakeries on Saturdays, in response to communal pres-
sure, was a step in the right direction. It can be fol-
lowed by similar efforts. It is in our hands to dedicate
the year "Tov, SHin, Beis" to SHaBaT.

NEW YORK (JPS) — Life
magazine, which has given itself
the unenviable task of whitewash-
ing men like Charles A. Lind-
bergh, has now pulled up its
sleeves and gone to work on pret-
tifying North Carolina's anti-
Semitic Senator Robert Reynolds,
who according to Life "don't hate
nobody."
In an article by Robert Cough-
lan in the Sept. 8 issue, Life pic-
tures Reynolds as a genial, good-
time Charlie. It is not until the
end of the article that anti-Sem-
itism and Reynolds sponsorship
of the Vindicator Association, Inc.,
are mentioned. Following a bree-
zy, detailed description of Rey-
nold's popularity in the Senate,
his many marriages, his political
shenanigans, the issue of Rey-
nolds and his anti-Jewish bias is
dealt with as folows:
"Along with the Congressional
Record, which he uses intemper-
ately, Reynolds' chief sounding
board for his views is the Vindi-
cator, publication of the Vindi-
cator Association, Inc. Reynolds
started the Vindicators in 1939
to 1) 'keep America out of war',
2) 'register and fingerprint all
aliens,' 3) 'stop all immigration
for the next ten years,' 4) 'deport
all alien criminals' and 5) 'banish
all foreign isms.' Within six
months, ho predicted, he would
have 1,000,000 Vindicators ready
and eager to protect the nation
against 'alien criminals' and other
menaces. He was over-optimistic.
Though the circulation of the
Vindicator—a subscription makes
otie a Vindicator—is a secret, the
most extravagant guesses put the
figure at no more than 50,000.
"As the personal organ of the
head Vindicator, the Vindicator
is an illuminating journal. Though
its columns deplore intervention
and 'isms,' particularly Commu-
nism, most space is given over to
the "alien menace.' The 'alien
menace' is described often in
headlines such as this: 'Jewish
Refugees Find Work; 'Rabbi Seeks
Admission of One Million War'
Refugees,' New U. S. Rules Hit
Immigration of German Jews.'
"Reynolds is indignant at the
suggestion that he or the Vindi-
cator Association is anti-Semitic.
'We're just anti-alien,' he ex-
plains. 'I want our own fine boys
and lovely girls to have all the
jobs in this wonderful country.'
In the past, however, he has car-
ried on friendly relations with
such notorious • Jew-baiters as
