Mr. Philip Slomovitz, Editor

Dear Phil:
It is a real pleasure to accept your invitation to
extend good wishes to the Jews of Michigan in the Rosh
Hashonah issue of The Detroit Jewish Chronicle, and
to _ . pay since_r_e_respectsin the_Araditions and history of
Israel at the start of the New Year 5702.
The current history being written in blood today
in the Old World would not have been possible had the-
peoples of the totalitarian nations not forgotten the
oldest lessons of history: That intolerance, denial of
human liberties and suppression of human dignity are
flames that cannot be controlled, once they are fanned,
and that they spread to engulf all classes, all creeds,
all peoples, who are not everlastingly on guard to stamp
out the first evil spark.
We see more clearly today the basic value of the
all-embracing belief in the Fatherhoqd of God and the
Brotherhood of Man. A democratic nation gladly joins
hands with its loyal citizens of Jewry in defending our-
selves against the physical and spiritual threats of the
dictators—their armies and their philosophies.
Very truly yours,
MURRAY D. VAN WAGONER,
Governor.

What

NEW YORK (JPS)—John Al-
den, one of the legends in Ameri-
can history, has had the queerest
descendants. The Sept. 8 issue of
Life reveals, in an article dealing
with the Aldens and their des-
cendants, that among those Ameri-
cans who can boast of Alden blood
are such different people as
Poetess Nathalia Crane, the Jew-
ish girl from Brooklyn, who cre-
ated a national sensation with
her "The Janitor's Boy, written
when she was a child, and Gen-
eral G. Van horn Moseley, viru-
lent anti-Semite, who once wanted

• David Freedman's Short Stories
Acclaimed by Konrad Bercov i ci
David Freedman's name was
best known as author of "Mendel
Marantz" and as collaborator
of Eddie Cantor. He cooperated
with the famous film, stage and
radio comedian in writing Can-
tor's "My Life Is In Your Hands."
Now, posthumously, this bril-
liant author's short stories are
published by Harper and Bros.,
49 E. 33rd St., New York. He
passed away at the height of his
brilliant career, and those who
studied his works maintain that
he would have risen to very great
heights if not for his untimely
death.
The posthumous work of David
Freedman appears under the title
of "The Intellectual Lover." This
is the name of the first story.
There are four others. Pathos and

humor, intimate studies, charac-
ters that are funny and sad—
these elements combine to make
this collection a deeply proving
set of brilliant stories. They are
stories about an unusual Don
Juan, about a ballet dancer and

her doll, a bootblack, circus freaks,
etc.
Konrad Bercovici, the eminent
writer who knew David Freed-
man from the age 'of seven on,
gives an intimate and touching
portrait of him by way of intro-
duction to this new volume of
his short stories, "The Intel-
lectual Lover." Mr. Bercovici early
recognized the younger man's tal-
ent and aided and encouraged him.
Both he and David's devoted fa-
ther were disappointed when Da-
vid forsook the short story for
the more lucrative job of fur-
nishing material for stage and
radio comedians.
"The last • time I saw David,"
says Mr. Bercovici, "he asked me
to read a new short story he had
written. When I had praised it
he said: 'I'll let everything go
hang and write only short stor-
ies. You were right. Father was
right. I never should have done
anything else. I w'sh I had never
known Broadway.' And then he
died, a year after his father's
death. How far he would haw ,
reached as a literary man, had he
lived and worked, ..cannot be
known. But he who at 20 had
absorbed enough of the atmos-
phere of the East Side to write
the Mendel Marantz stories would
undoubtedly have given us many
unforgettable stories of the life
and the people he had known
during his later life. The de
Maunassantesve quality of most
of the stories in this volume was
a new departure for David. He
had just about struck out for
himself when he was struck. His
hand had just become sure, cer-
tain, knowing what it was doing,
when it was stilled by death. I
never think of him without think-
ing that what he has written was
only the beginning. How far would
he have gone if he had lived out
the ordinary ,span of human life!
The real test of an artist is in
the promise that his work con-
tains and not in the fulfillment."

Gestapo Asks Germans to
Chip I a

GENEVA (JPS) — Duties of
the Gestapo must be extended to
deal with the rapidly increasing
espionage, according to reports
from Berlin. The German people
apparently leave all spying to the
Gestapo—which means that coun-
ter-espionage, acts of treason and
other such foods of war flourish
throughout the Third Reich. Rein-
hard Heydrich, deputy to Gestapo
Chief Ileinrcih Ilimmler, will pre-
pare a "People's Reporting Ser-
vice," which will aim to mobilize
"the political attention of . the
German people."

Let your religion, be seen.
Lamps do not talk, but they do
shine. A lighthouse sounds no
it beats no gong; yet far
over the waters, its friendly light
is seen by the mariner.—Cuyler.
