Shaarey Zedek's
Library Receives
New Hebrew Books

Shaarey Zedek Library, which
is continually enlarging its col-
lection of Judaica, has recently
acquired a number of important
publications in Hebrew. These
include works of history, litera-
ture, biography, education and
books of lighter and more popu-
lar vein, such as novels and short
stories.
Of special interest to students
of Hebrew literature, are Dr. H.
N. Shapiro's first volume of
"Toldos Hasafrus Hachadosho,"
which covers with great thor-
oughness the Haskalah period
from 1784 to 1829. "Maasef," a
collection of articles and poetry
and prose selections by modern
writers, and "Kisve Moshe Glick-
son," a book of essays on out-
standing men in science, litera-
ture and Zionism. Other books of
equal importance include: Dr.
Arthur Ruppin's historical and
sociological analysis of Jewish
survival, "Milchemes Hayehudim
Lkiyumon;" Sh. Y. Tcharnov's
history of education in Palestine,
"Lsoldos Hachinuch Byisroel,"
and a translation of Herman
Rauschning's discussions with der
fuehrer and his cohorts. This
book is entitled "Sichos Im Hit-
ler."
In the realm of fiction the fol-
lowing volumes should provide
interesting reading, "Bshaleches,"
by Natan Greenblatt; "Lechem
V'yayin," a translation of
"Bread and Wine," by Ignazio
Silone; "Zalmanayim," by M.
Kolbak, "R'chov Hechosul Hatzad
Dogim," by Yolon Peledge and
"Chomos Habarzal," by Soroh
Glozman.
The Hebrew-speaking public is
especially invited to avail them-
selves of these books and other
publications in the same cate-
gory.
The Shaarey Zedek Library
is now also receiving a fine as-
sortment of Hebrew pediodicals
which number among them the
Palestine Daily Haaretz, the
monthly magazine Moznaim pub-
lished by the Hebrew Writers'
Association in Eretz Yisroel, the
Bitzaron and Hadoar.
The library is open for refer-
ence and circulation of books
during the following hours:
10 a. m. to 12 p. m., 2 p. m.
to 5:30 p. in., and 7 p. m. to 9
P. M., on Mondays, Tuesdays,
Wednesdays and Thursdays; 9:30
a. m. to 12:30 p. m. on Fridays;
9 a. m. to 1 p. m. on Sundays.

Ort Opens Training School
for Refugees in China

NEW YORK. — Establishment
of an Ort training school for
refugees in Shanghai, China, last
month was announced by George
Backer, president of the Amer-
ican Ort Federation.
The school is supervised by a
committee of leading Shanghai
Jews. It is the second Ort in-
stitution outside Europe, the first
having been established in Bue-
nos Aires, Argentina, last Spring.
China thus becomes the 10th
country in which Ort, the or-
ganization for rehabilitation and
training, operates trade schools,
workshops and farm centers.
The Shanghai school started
with three courses—carpentry,
locksmithing and electrical work
— and can accommodate 220
men. Another building is being
sought for a women's school.
In Europe, including ghetto
districts and refugee camps, Ort
institutions are functioning to-
day in France, Great Britain,
Germany; Poland, Switzerland,
Hungary, Bulgaria and Rumania,
where in 1940 more than 20,500
men, women and young people—
refugees and other war victims
benefitted through Ort's program.
Most of the funds for this work
are raised in overseas welfare
drives in cities throughout the
United States.
