Faith Based on "Earthly" Unity

I)

By RABBI JOSHUA S. SPERKA
Our task in the present crisis crated tyranny and persecution
is, not to criticise God, but to and permitted poverty and in-
correct ourselves; not to reform justice? Are we not part of a

In ordinary times it may be empty of ethical enthusiasm, so
pardoned, but in crucial times steeped in secular sensualism,
none of us have a right as crea- blame God for its own undoing?

ing and giving to man.
There was a tragic train acci-
dent in which many lost their
lives, many more were injured,
and all involved were Terrified
and frightened. From the report,
I gathered very familiar reac-
tions - of the uninjured. One was
overcome with emotion and sym-
pathy and he began moaning and
groaning. So resentful and la-
mentful was he that he could
only grieve and gruinble, rave
and rage. Another involved,
could be seen running and with-
out plan or purpose he pulled
windows and pushed doors, carry-
ing wounded people to and for
, but bringing no real help to any-
one. He waited for no one, for
no order. He had his own ideas
and his own formula of aid. A
third one stood by the physician
on the scene. He followed the
physician's order to carry and
lift, to bandage the bleding and
to bind up the wounded.
Humanity, and surely our peo-
ple have met with a tragic calam-
itous catastrophe. And what are
we doing about it? Look objec-
tively and you will see how often
We display the stupidity of the
first and the absurdity of the
second horrified train passenger.
People everywhere complaining
and criticising satisfy their con-
sciences with a "krechtz". Or
the more aggressive and more
energetic run to save the pieces
without plan or purpose.
Fretful and frantic, untrained
and untutored, they are so over-
come with their own importance
that they wait for no orders or
leadership. They have their own
ideas, their own formulas, and
their own solutions.
Why new Revelations when we
really need acceptation? Why
new Reformations when we real-
ly need Information? "The sec-
ret things belong unto the Lord
our God, but the things that are
revealed belong unto us and our
children forever, that we may
do all the words of this Law"
(Dent. 29:28). Why weary our-
selves with worries of divine
plans and eternal purposes. Let
us take to heart more "Earthly"
problems and attempt to solve
them in a seasoned and sober
manner, guided by the inspira-
tion of the ages and enforced
by the tradition of our sages.
Have we done out part that we
take God to account? Have we
proved worthy that we demand
so much? Are we not a part of
a generation that substituted
Gold for God and lust for law?
Are we not part of a generation
that made man a machine and
religion a superfluity. Are we
not part of a humanity that tol-

LATEST EDITION OF
HOLIDAY SERMON
PAMPHLET PUBLISHED

Head Office: Winnipeg

The 1941 edition of the "Set
of Holiday Sermons" has been
made available by the Tract
Commission sponsored by the
Union of American Hebrew Con-
gregations and the Central Con-
ference of American Rabbis.
Each fall, these organizations,
with the aid of distinguished
rabbis, prepare and distribute a
Pamphlet of sermons for the hol-
idays of the Jewish year as a
service to congregations that do
not have permanent rabbis. Many
congregations which hold their
own services have availed them-
selves of this method to hear a
message of counsel and strength. 411 ■ 11=6.
