Lindbergh Removes His Mask
President Brightens
Cohens' Anniversary
NEW YORK (JPS) — It all
happened when one of their
grandsons, Second Lieutenant
Leonard Pearlman, was ordered
to another post. Mr. and Mrs.
Samuel Cohen were preparing
to celebrate their golden wed-
ding anniversary on the day that
Lieutenant Pearlman was to be
transferred. His mother prompt-
ly appealed to President Roose-
velt and F.D.R. immediately pro-
vided for her son's release for
the celebration of the 50th wed-
ding anniversary of his grand-
parents.
What is more, Mr. Roosevelt
sent a special message of greet-
ing to the Cohens. But Mr. Co-
hen was skeptical about the
whole business, because the
White House had requested that
the letter should not be opened
before the family party. "I'll
believe what I hear about the
letter from President Roosevelt
when I see it," said the 73-year-
old tailor. Mr. and Mrs. Cohen
got the thrill of their lives when
they posed for news photograph-
ers with a photo of their soldier-
grandson, Second Lieutenant
Pearlman.

New Republic Asks for Justice
To Both Jews and Arabs
In Near East
The New Republic, liberal week-
ly which has long shied away
from Zionist questions, effectively
straddles the issue in the Sept.
8 number, pointing to the
ineptness and bungling of British
diplomacy in the near East and
asking for "Justice for both
sides."
"It is sometimes hastily assumed
that because of the Palestine ques-
tion justice for the Moslems is
incompatible with justice for the
Jews, but this is not true; in
fact, the only ultimate solution
of that vexed issue is justice for
both sides," this magazine says.
The way to obtain Moslem sup-
port for the Allied war effort.
the New Republic feels, lies in
a declaration by the United
States, in which the Moslems are
supposed to have confidence, that
we would not tolerate peace trea-
ties unfair to them. Such a decla-
ration would bring "an electrify-
ing response," the editorial main-
tains.
