The Spirit of Revolt

When you read reports of mass ar-
rests of Jews who are charged with re-
sponsibility for rebellion in France and
other Nazi-occupied countries, and who
are called Communists, look between the
lines.
Something is happening in Europe.
There is a spirit of revolt, and if Jews
are helping to fan it then they will be
given credit by posterity for great hero-
ism.
No man has a right to submit to tyr-
anny, oppression and slavery, and the
brave men and women in France and else-
where who are today showing their true
human colors will be listed among the
truly great by history.
As this is being written, there is a re-
port of a rump session of a portion of
the French Parliament in defiance of the
Nazi puppet Petain. Should the aims oc
such a session materialize and should
there soon be, as all hope there will be,
a return to liberte, egalite fraternite, in
all of France, then this will , be an historic
moment.
May the hands of these rebels be
strengthened, and may the world at large
know the truth and refuse to accept as
facts the reports that come from the Nazi
butchers.

Food for Europe

A group of 62 American rabbis have
issued a signed statement urging that the
Belgian population be provided with food
by the Herbert Hoover National Commit-
tee on Food for Small Democracies.
In order that people should not be mis-
led by this appeal, it becomes necessary
to make known a statement by the Bel-
gian Secretary of Agriculture and Sup-
plies, Mr. De Winter, who told of "the
massive requisitions of foodstuffs of all
kinds" by the Nazis, and who declared
that this is the chief cause of food short-
age.
Mr. De Winter said : "If the Nazi au-
thorities stopped their requisitions, it
would be possible to supply meat for the
whole population on a basis of 50
grammes per days for about two years."
At the same time, "News from Bel-
gium," the official organ of the Belgian
government in America, points out: "At
the time the Nazi-inspired press were at-
tacking the British for starving Belgium
to death through the blockade, the Nazis,
according to American eye-witnesses,
were sending wagon-loads of Belgian po-
tatoes to Germany. When the workmen
in the coal mines and in the heavy indus-
tries finally became too weak to do a nor-
mal amount of work, the Nazis sent spe-
cial rations to these plants and factories,
taking the rations away from the rest of
the population who were in dire need of
them."
Under such circumstances, how many
will support the plea of the 62 rabbis
and their associates who would send food
to Belgium, remaining blind to the fact
that it will be requisitioned by the Nazis?
Wake up, gentlemen ! The quality of
mercy is not strained, but it can be sacri-
ficed across the river by the myopic who,
although they are sincere, fail to see the
wild beast who is ready to devour what
they would send to the innocently suffer-
ing victims of this beast.

A Program for Democracy

Under the title "While America
Sleeps," Station WJR inaugurated a
splendid program for democracy, last
Friday evening.
The initial broadcast showed the men-
ace of appeals to hatred. It indicated that
unless it is checked, every hate move-
ment will tend to undermine the security
of America.
America must be on guard against such
manifestations. Americans must be mili-
tant in their opposition to bigotry and
intolerance and they must take the lead
against it — just as the central figure
does in the WJR broadcasts.
To be effective such radio presentations
should IA continued. Their continuity
will help enlighten the masses and keep
them vigilant against unworthy move-
ments.
Station WJR is to be congratulated for
presenting this type of program.

For the Men in Service of U. S.

The High Holy Days' approach pro-
vides a new responsibility for Jewish com-
munities throughout the country.
The men in the service of the United
States military forces will be given fur-
loughs to observe Rosh Hoshanah and
Yom Kippur, and the cities neighboring
on military camps will be called upon
to invite the men to synagogues, to have
them as guests in private homes, to make
their holidays pleasant for them.
Many of the men from Fort Custer and
Selfridge Field will be coming to Detroit.
The Detroit Jewish Army and Navy Com-
mittee, which is serving as a branch of
the Jewish Welfare Board, will soon
issue a call to Detroit Jews to be hospi-
table to these men and to be their hosts.
The response should be wholehearted
and spontaneous. The major problem to-
day is that of building morale, and this
will be one way of doing it for the Jewish
soldiers.

Stick to Your Posts!

We were among the few who protested
against the removal of the headquarters
of the Zionist Organization of America
to Washington.
We now desire to be among those who
oppose the removal of the offices of the
Union of American Hebrew Congrega-
tions to Washington.
The American Israelite of Cincinnati
is to be commended for the stand it has
taken against the projected move by the
newly-appointed executive secretary of
the Union, Rabbi Edward Israel. There
is no earthly reason for creatinga new
wanderlust on a mass scale in Jewish life,
and a halt ought to be called to the new
fad of organizations swooping down upon
Washington.
What is to be gained from centralizing
all Jewish activities in Washington?
What has Bnai Brith gained from such
a move? What advantages were acquired
by the Zionist movement in the purchase
of a building for national headquarters
in the nation's Capitol?
It is doubtful whether a single advan-
tage can be pointed to in any one of
these cases. Zionism, as we pointed out
when the removal bug first hit the new
Zionist leadership, would have been bet-
ter off in the center of the largest Jewish
community in the world. Similarly, we
believe that the Union of American He-
brew Congregations is infinitely better
off next to Hebrew Union College and in
the city where the Reform Jewish move-
ment was founded.
Already overcrowded, the center of
political strife and of lobbyists, Washing-
ton is not a natural center for Jewish
activities. Where the people are, there
ought to be the people's leaders. Where
tradition has been established, there
ought to be the fruit of that tradition.
Rabbi Israel is on the wrong track, and
his intial effort in his new post is a thor-
oughly unwise one. Instead of learning
from experience, he is emulating the
blunders of the new leadership of the
Zionist Organization of America. We ad-
vise him to retrace his steps, and we urge
the Union of American Hebrew Congre-
gations to reject his proposal and to
listen to the advice extended by the
American Israelite and those who indorse
its views against flight to Washington.
